Engine Ping!!!

What are the causes of engine "ping" at low RPM under moderate load? I'm thinking timing, but was wondering if there are any other common causes.

Oh yeah, I'm talking about a 1990 4x4 truck with 22re. New engine with about 3,000 miles.

hmmmm, it never pinged with 87 octane gas before. Gone through several tanks, so I don't think it's bad gas.
