a/c recharge problem

My a/c would never get cold, but the compresser clutch always engaged,so I decided that I would recharge it.
I added one 12 ounce can to the system and it caused the compresser to only run for about 15 seconds at a time,so I just figured it was a pressure sensor shuting it off to protect it form a low freon level
so I added another 12 0unce can,and now it only runs for only 1 to 2 seconds before shuting off.

So my question is it possible to add to much freon to the system to cause it to shut off.Or im I having a hole other problem.....

I'm assuming and hope that you are using a pressure gauge included with the freon can( or if you have a seperate one)

Do you have an R-12 or R-134a system as I didn't know they sell R-12 to anyone unless you're a mechanic and have connections or something...

Answer to question: YES you most absolutely can put too much freon in your system if pressure is not properly checked after every few ounces are put in or a problem will probably arise.

You need a set of manifold A/C 134a or R-12 gauges to keep tabs on the low and high sides of the system. To much head pressure will cause your system to explode and then you have problems and injury if your close by. If your not A/C knowledgeable find somebody that is cause it's nothing to play with!!

Ditto to the

You can find manifold sets cheap on E-bay! You can tell alot about the system if you know how to read the manifold set. Make sure the set is for your type of refrigerant....there is a difference in the fittings and pressures.

Be very careful or you can ruin your system (contamination, etc) or yourself (eyes, fingers).

If you think there is a leak, fix it first, or moisture can ruin your compressor, and the new refrigerant will leak out anyway. It's really not that hard to learn, but I would recommend a Chiltons or other manual.
