Is it ok to buy just the axle housing?
I've found someone selling an 83 axle housing for cheap. Since I planned to replace/repair most of the components from whatever axle I got anyway, is there any reason to pass this up and look for a total axle assembly? Basically, is there a reason I should pay 200-300 for a full axle assembly when I'm just going to gut it? Here's some pictures, if you guys see anything that should turn me away let me know! Thanks!

i would pass on that one, looks rusty as , be hard to get those wheel bearing nuts off, i would get a full assembly, you get the third then and can re gear and i would look for one with less rust, that might be impossible depending on where you live. think of buying new hubs brakes spindles bearings all of that including a diff, might be chaeper in the lobg run and easire to get a whole assembly, but if its not in your budget good luck on this one, post pics of your build man

Pass.
I just bought a new front axle housing for my 90 2 door 4Runner SAS 3.4 swap cause it's new, the right width and I already have 3rds, spindles, knuckles etc to put in it.
For the minimal price difference I won't be using any more 25+ year old front axle housings, especially ones that look like that. You'll spend 10+ hours cleaning that one up and then it still might be bent.

I hate bad news, but thanks guys. My logic was that I would be getting a V6 4.88 3rd, Longfields, and the TG IFS eliminator kit so most of the assembly would be getting replaced, but I hadn't thought about how hard taking this one apart would be as well as the work to de-rust. Wabbit what do you mean by 'new' axle? The TG Rock Assaults or something?

Yep. I am using all the TG parts I sell including the new front axle housing. It is all coming next week with my stock order.
When you get ready to order your stuff let me know.

Like I said, I can get decent ones for 2-300, this one was 40 and was just the housing, which is why I was interested. Thanks though!
