Since it's going to be cold, please come prepared for cold weather. Bring sleeping bags/camping gear even though it's only a day run. With the recent change in the weather, the trail conditions are unknown so please prepare for whatever nature brings us. Better to show up prepared than be stranded out and freeze to death!

Hwy. 330 / 18: (Running Springs) Open and Clear
Hwy. 38: (Redlands) Chains are required

Looks like the back route (that I want to take) will require chains for 2wd unless you have 4wd! With the clouds lingering over the mountain, the condition of the trail is unknown. I'm expecting white everywhere on the back side of the mountain that we want to hit.

This will definitely change plans on trails that we want to it. I highly doubt we'll be doing any of the difficult trails now due to it being very very difficult. We will play this by ear when we hit the discovery center and do a group decision on what we want to do. I suspect that the easy/moderate trails will be difficult now. The easy group will stay completely on the fire roads as I think it'll be very scenic. Regardless everyone will have a blast!

Please bring shovels/wood and misc gear for the trip. Come prepared!!!! Snow = MUD so be careful out there

Snow wheeling shouldn't be all that bad on the easier trails. It it's only a light dusting it will be more like mud wheeling than anything else. Aside from potentially not wanting to air down (or not air down as much) it shouldn't be too big of a headache.

For those on the harder trails, it may complicate things a bit more. If nothing else, judgement calls by those participating can be made at the trail heads. Should be fun.

One other item that is very handy to have is a couple of carpet strips (or a bag of sand) 4 to 5 feet in length and about as wide as your tires. These can be great traction aids when you get on ice.

Those of you with pickups may want to throw some ballast in the bed (be sure to secure it) just to help ensure traction with the rear wheels. I usually fill up my water cans and tie them down against the tail gate but anything that can be secured from roaming around your bed will work.

Im running my stock 265/70-16 bfg rugged trails . Am I gonna be ok on muddy trails ? I do have a locked rear so I assume that will come in handy.

I still have my factory tires and I've run Lytle Canyon up Mt. Baldy in the snow.

ok sounds good , I have driven on muddy hills before and it did fine but I have never actualy been on any trails. I hope I dont slow everybody down to much.

I have an extra pair of chains that will fit 31x10.5" if anyone wants to borrow them or buy them off me for cheap.

Lance I gotta bail out on this one. I just cannot be gone all day. So I am gonna run over to MarcP's and help with some wrenchin on his 2nd gen in the morning. Gonna see if I can hit up Corral Canyon next weekend. I am bummed!

I wish I still lived out there, my family used to have a house up in Big Bear, it was in our family from 1980, I miss it so much. If only I still had it, we could have an all-weekender. It had a perfect view of Snow Summit (great for new years). But we moved before I could drive so I never got to off-road it myself (but I did with my brothers Chevy and his motorcycle) lol, if I did still live there it would be my first place to learn snow sports, water sports (except surfing), and probably off-roading too.

No worries Andrew. I've lived in CA since birth. I learned to ski at Snow Summit when I was 6. We did family camping at Barton Flats. There were scout camps, overnight trips up Gorgonio . . . . winter xc ski trips, dirt bike adventures all over the mountains. I'm stuck down here in the flatlands this weekend . . . . wishing I was thrashing the last bit of life out of my 5 cylinder 3VZE with the YotaTech crew. So, you're not alone.

i guess im the first one to post after the trip. Awsome trip today met some cool people and had a great time.. Even though it was the easy stuff it was still a little hard to try and keep the skid plate from hitting....(took home a couple of dings) Thanks Big Bear....Anyways look forward to another trip hopefully sooner than later when there might be a little more snow...Anyways thanks to everyone for the wonderful outing today...it was Great....

Nice pictures Mark. Ill have to do some mods before i try that hard stuff i saw in those pictures..no wonder lance blew a tire...that rock section looked pretty difficult.
