MY '87 4x4 22re is starting to give out (not too mention won't pass stupid CA smog) I'm thinking of possibly giving it up after 305k miles of service and getting something newer after 10 years. Can anyone tell me if this sounds reasonable for the price of a 4runner like this these days?
Thats a clean looking truck, I expect the frame is as clean, I'm not a fan of the 2.7L, roof racks are nice, and I like the look of the limited with flares and leather interior, and multi-mode 4wd, 4x4. But others don't like that stuff, personally I think it also has to many miles for that price, $6-7000 seems more appropriate with a 2.7L base model IMO

I'm 50/50 on the 2.7. Having a 22re for so long, I'm obviously a fan of the 4cyls. That being said I am concerned about moving a heavier vehicle than my 87 pickup... such as a 3rd gen runner down the a highway reliably without needing to stay in the slow lane all the time. I can find 3.4's in auto, but can't seem to find any 5spd 3.4s without a ton of miles. Ideally looking for something less than 200k (which I know is hard for a 96-04).
The same place is selling a 3.4 SR5 (I tend to prefer SR5s) with 180k but with an auto for $7,500. I'm not a huge fan of auto transmissions as I always feel a manual is sturdier. But beggars can't be choosers. How long can these things go without a rebuild?
The 3.4L is adequate for mountain passes, and highway passing, after the 3.4L toyota went with a 4.0L (gear driven timing) which is a powerhouse with similar gas milage as the 3.4L for a good reason. I have never driven a 2.7L so cannot attest to the performance, but I suspect the 2.7L with auto would be depressing to drive. The 3.4L is good for 300,000mi easily when maintained accordingly (I get 150,000mi on the 3.4L t-belt and they are in decent shape still). I believe the auto will go further with less maintenance than the 5-speed if you swap out the radiator before the en-evidable Transmission & Rad fluid fluid swap. You should be looking for something around 100,000mi they do exist still if you hold out and run when they come up.
Man you guys get clean rigs down south, here you see some with the frame patched, rockers gone, rear t-gate and bumper rusted to holy hell because of the liquid calcium chloride and rock salt they pour on the roads.
Ah, good point. Doesn't seem like they will. Will have to look into tires comparable on a 16" wheel. I did consider that a 5spd 4x4 2.7 isn't a common package. I wonder if they weren't ordered very much for a reason back then?
I have a 3rd gen 4Runner with the 2.7 and 5 speed combo. I haven't driven the V6, so I can't compare, but the I feel like the 5-speed gives a decent amount of power to the small engine. You probably can't tow anything, and it's not fast off the line, but it's fine for normal driving. It even has enough power to pull out some shrubs in my yard in 4-wheel-low
Can I ask what you guys think my 4Runner is worth? 1996, 2.7L, 5-speed, 4x4, with 160k miles. It's a stock truck, but it's in fair condition. I have paint issues only on the front driver's fender, and I have a bent bumper because I was rear ended in an ice storm a few winters ago. Some rust on the chassis because I am in the northeast (allentown PA). It definitely rides like an older vehicle, it needs shocks.
