For my 88 4runner, I was wanting to get some off road lights that were 100 watts a piece. My question is, will I have to upgrade anything in order to run these lights? Will my alternator and other electrical stuff be able to support the wattage on these lights? I was looking at some KC lights on e bay and was wondering if that was a good choice as well. I am a rookie when it comes to this sort of thing so please bare with me. thanks so much for any help that you may be able to give me.

100 watts will be fine with a stock alternator, just make sure your wiring, fuses, and relays are up to the task.

KC makes a good light. They have been around for awhile. I myself like the Hella 500s. Either driving or fog, whichever you want. I have to hella 500 fogs on the brushguard and plan on adding two hella driving on the roof rack. You can put a 55w, 100w, or 130w bulb in the hellas. I would advise against the 130w though because things can get real hot in there.

There is alot of conrtoversy over the lights. Everyone has their own opinion about them. Basicall they are lights. Some might be a little brighter then others, some might last a little longer then others, but they all emit light! Go with what fits your budget and what suits ur cosmetic needs.

Edit for more light tech: Fogs produce a more widespread beam. They cover alot of area but not alot of distance. Driving lights are more narrow beams the travel a long way.

Kyle post some good info above. If you can ask around with some of your friends or head on over to a local automotive shop. A lot of the times they will have various lights for you to check out (functioning sets). If after you get the lights installed (actually a good idea anyways) make sure you have good solid grounds. Check your fuses, as these can help reduce "dimming". Worse case just upgrade your alternator and add it to the list of upgrades

i have 4 150W KCs and love them... just make sure like already stated they are wired correctly using Relays and good grounds.

Cheapest set of lights in that survey was $139 excluding the kmart ones. DAANNG, that is 2 sets of hella 500s. Some of those lights went up to 500 somethin a pair. There is no way anyone could get me to spend that much on a pair of lights!! Aside from all that, thanks for the article Nick. Would be nice to see them run the same test on name brand lights under 100 a pair.

i saw some Hella 500's at Walmart for 62 bucks. i was surprised they carried them. how do you like them? did you get fog or driving? is the light amber or clear? i know they are 55w but are they pretty bright or would i be better off getting the 100w pro comps as stated above for around the same price? thanks
