Non-Tach Speedo wiring vs. Tach Speedo wiring
I am looking at a 1998 Tacoma Speedometer cluster with a tachometer and was wondering if the wiring is available on all Tacomas for this setup. I currently have a non-tach speedometer on mine and wanted to see if I could upgrade it.
Also, if this can be done, is there a way the Toyota dealer can re-program the odometer to match the actual miles that I have with the original Speedometer?

The consistent 'party line' is that the Tacomas were all built with the same wiring harness, so the basic wiring for a tach is there behind the dash. Transplanting a tach cluster into a non-tach'ed Taco of the same year or era ('95.5-'97; '98-'00;'01-'04) is pretty much a plug 'n' play proposition.
However.....
There are a couple of factors you want to be sure of:
- the new cluster must be from a Taco with the same number of cylinders as yours (adapting 4-cyl to 6-cyl or vice versa is next to impossible without major electronic frankensteining....)
- I notice you have an automatic - on the column??... You may need to ensure the new cluster has (or doesn't have) the auto gear indicators on its face (column autos only, if I recall correctly), so as to match the one you already have.
However.....

As to recalibration... Every once in a while someone mentions the dealership's shop doing it, so my impression is that they can... There are such things as specialized speedometer shops ( ... I didn't believe it myself 'til I checked the Yellow Pages...) that should be able to do it for you. There are even speedo specialists online (names and web addresses escape me right now...) to whom you can ship the unit for odo adjustment.
The main thing is to cover yourself legally by having an air-tight paper trail on the actual mileage. The legal penalties come into play if you ever sell the truck and can be construed as having misrepresented the actual mileage...

I was thinking that the harnesses are the same since the older generatiions made in Japan were, but I wasn't 100% sure. BTW, I have the shifter on the floor and the speedometer I am looking at does not have the indicator, so I think I am almost there. I need to check on the cyl # then. Thanks for the info.
