Dual battery/Dual alternator advice

G’day
I’m after some help with the electrical system on my Ute. I’m running a ’94 Hilux with the 22R engine. As I understand the OEM alternator is capable of producing 60 amps. Assuming an output of 12v I’m getting 720 watts of juice. As well as the OEM equipment I’ve currently got 2 55w spots that come on when the high beams are engaged and a set of 2 55w rearward facing spots that come on when the vehicle is in reverse but can be turned on independently for working at night or shooting off the deck. I also have a handheld 100w spotlight that plugs into the cigarette lighter and an aftermarket head unit (capable of 50w per channel with max current consumption of 10A.) I am using 2 35w speakers with no amplifier or subwoofer. So currently (no pun intended) when I’m out spotlighting for animals, my lights alone are using 440w or 36.7A (the headlight bulbs are 55/60’s) plus the heater, head unit and engine.

As an aside, how many amps do the blower in the heater and the engine draw e.g. how much “head room” do I need to leave for the OEM equipment and head unit. Would I be right in believing the head unit would draw about 8.5A as I’m only using two channels?

I’ve got a set of bullbars with lights coming next week and intend to rewire the main headlights for relays in the near future and put bigger bulbs in them. I am also seriously considering a CB radio in the next few months and more lights

Ideally I want to put a second battery in and put all my aux. lights on it. My concern is that I’ll pull to much juice off the alternator and begin to discharge the batteries. So, I suppose my question is, what is my best option as far as powering goes?
My thoughts at the moment are:-
Keep the OEM alt. with a dual charge system and not worry about the aux. lights as the battery will charge during the day when I’m not using them.
Replace the OEM alt with a larger alt. with a dual charge system.
Put a second alt. in to the second battery and keep it completely independent of the OEM battery and electrical system. This is probably my preferred option. I don’t have an A/C unit so have a spare pulley to use. I would just have to find or fabricate a bracket that would work.

So, any thoughts or observations?

Cheers

Nick

have your alt rewound for better output or swap over a gm alternator. There are many threads on upgrading power, all you gotta do is use our seach to find them.

So it's not even worth considering a second alt?

I believe that's what he's saying. I think your best option would be to bump the output of the stock alternator, or swap in a higher output. There would be much less fabrication involved, and I think you'd be much happier. Having two alternators is just adding one more thing to fail in my opinion.

MR2 alternator puts out 100amps at idle, this is for a 3VZ engine, but i don't see why it wouldn't work on a 22re with a different pulley, and a modified mounting bracket.

This setup is in my future.

I've seen a thread when I was looking into the second battery for my lights. It showed how to wire up the second battery and a device to seperate them

I went with a 130 amp alt from grand rebuilders. I plan on running something similar to your setup.

Do the dual alts for the ultimate in reliability. Install a switch on the field wire of the accessory alternator so you can turn it off when you're not running the lights.
