automatic transmission only shifting when heater fan is off?
I have a 1986 4runner with a 22re automatic tranny and the only way it will shift into overdrive or last gear is for the heater fan to be off, wondering what could cause this i know it must be something electrical? any ideas would be appreciated

when i ran my truck (22re auto 4x4) for a while without a thermostat, it would take a VERY long time for it to shift into overdrive. Transmission fluid was at the proper level but MY THEORY is that because I wasn't able to reach a higher / normal operating temp and since the transmission lines run through the radiator (auto trans) that therefore my transmission fluid must need a certain temp reached before it will shift smoothly and also before it will go into overdrive.
prior to having the t-stat out it would take a minute or 2 for this temp to be reached while driving but when it was out I would drive to work (18 miles) without ever going into overdrive. Put the t-stat back in and everything was good.
To sum it up....I believe proper (or a certain) operating temperature must be reached before it shifts into overdrive.........and having the fan on just expells more heat and keeps that operating temp down.
I may be dead wrong and full of crap, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

There is a coolant temp. sender for the ECT computer that prevents overdrive use when the engine is too cool. Might be that sender is marginally bad or there is an issue with the cooling system that running the heater keeps the temp. from getting high enough. Perhaps too cold of a thermostat for example.

hmm.. that makes sense to me. What im thinking my problem could be is i put on an electric fan and i have it set to come on a little bit before the normal operating temp... so maybe thats my problem
