worth it? 89 reg cab 5 speed 3.0
hey guys, i know this belongs under feeler but i couldnt find it on the forms so feel free to move it, today i called about an 89 reg cab short bed pickup, its just a dlx cold a/c everything works, 4x4 etc, its a 3.0 with a 5 speed, an dhe wants 1800$ for it, the only thing is it needs a rear 3rd, i have a 3rd out of a 85 22r, would it fit? or o i need a v6 3rd? its dirty for sure but the body is clean with almost no rust, and only little dents and dings, the interior is fairly clean, the clutch is new, and it has a nice chrome brush guard, im looking for a new DD and cant seem to find a no brainer deal yet (you know what i mean) so tell me fellow yota techrs, is 1800 for a cold a/c 3.0 5 speed with 198k miles needing a rear 3rd worth it? also will need some tires

I dunno about anybody else, but to me a running vehicle in need of minor work is easily worth $2k. Where I live the truck you describe would be in the 3k range.
I guess it really depends on the market where you live.

It better be in pretty good shape for a 20 yr old rig if it costs more than a grand and can't be driven home, IMO.
I would doubt the 4s and 6s have the same gears but don't know. Check the tags http://www.brian894x4.com/Gearratiosanddiffs.html

I would hold out. Just FYI, I picked up my 90 in August of 09 in Rhode Island with 95K original miles and it was clean for an east coast truck for $2250, so I would think if you scour Craigslist for long enough and have patience a better deal will come up.
$1800 seems a little steep and definitely more than I would be willing to pay for an 89 3.0 with a busted rear third and 200K miles.
If it didn't need a rear end I would think $1800 would be a pretty good deal. Like I said, just be patient and wait for that no-brainer deal, you'll find it. I've bought used cars out of haste in the past and always ended up regretting it.

Anyways, just be patient and I bet for around 2 grand you'll be able to find a 22RE powered 4WD that you can test drive and subsequently drive home if you want.

go to this person and try to bargain down the price a couple hundred cuz thats about what another third will cost, even more to regear it. although a 3rd may cost only 100- 200, it is a bargaining chip in your favor.
you got nothing to lose and if you don't need to drive it right away, you can look for a 3rd to put in. your 4 cyl. 3rd will work as mentioned above but if the gears are different you can't go 4x4-ing.
it's probably not a bad price.
good luck.

Just the fact the rear was out what else might have been messed up.
i think you did good holding off .
Why would different gear ratios not allow you to use 4 wheel drive??
Granted on dry hard black top or concrete the torque bind would be maybe enough to break things.
In slippery conditions it does not matter . I had a GMC 4x4 back in the early seventies that I ran mismatched gears for years.
