What is it about the 22RE?
Okay, just admitting up front that I dont know much about engines. I know the basics, I can do basic maintenance and all but im not exactly a veteran in this field. My '93 is my first and only vehicle thus far in life so I haven't had the experience with other vehicles in the past for a comparison you know?
Going to basic in a few days and I'm confident at some point somebody's gonna start one of those "Oh yeah well what have you got under your hood" conversations.....and I dont want to appear ignorant...at first anyway. Also just curious.
Everywhere I seem to go, be it here, youtube, yahoo answers or other toyota forums...everybody is always saying the 22RE is awespome. I know its rather underpowered in almost all categories, some highway hills are a bit of a pain but it seems light simple and reliable to me. Other than that I can't imagine what is so great about it.
Anybody have any overview or feedback or 22RE lore that I need to brush up on?
Thanks guys.

Perfect truck engine. Good torque, simple design, go forever. Take a major beating and will keep going.
I bet you could hold a stock 22re at full throttle for a month straight and it would laugh at you.....

i have the 22re, i love my truck, and the 22re is the most reliable engine in my oppinion, for the past 10 years and 100k miles my truck had no oil changes or nothin, it was beaten and redlined about 20 hours everday and it still starts right up for me everyday, ive heard so many stories like mine about the 22re and they all say their 22re's run like a champ, another thing to look at is that theyre so easy to work on, once my engine ran terrible and after a while it died, i was thinkin the worst, but it turned out to be a $10 fuel filter, the 22re's rarely have major complications , if they dont run right, its usually something simple, like a fuel filter for example. and i almost forgot to mention, theres so many 22re's out there that parts are cheap and redily available

i did an oil change on a honda civic at work like a month ago, 250K miles, pulled the drain plug and NOTHING came out, literally 1 drop, that was it
put new oil in and it ran fine, idk how long the owner drove it like that but only a couple of engines can take that kind of abuse and keep going cough22recough

Jeez you guys are making me feel bad for swapping out my 22re lol
But yes, GREAT motor. It has ALWAYS started. And never had any major problems. The only times it didnt start was because the battery terminals were covered in that lovely white crap. But a couple hits with my trusty flower print screwdriver and it would start right up. Oh and it has about 250k on it.
