Vibration under power

So I thought the truck was riding so poorly because the alignment was so out of whack, but after getting it done, it still rides rough. But only when the clutch is out, especially at low RPM's (like lugging the motor). Push the clutch in, and it gets much better.

Searching led me to alignment and wheel balance, but nothing that would change when the truck is under power and coasting.

Vibration under power? Sounds like an unbalanced or worn drive shaft to me. But that's just a wild guess. I had a vibration while accelerating on an AT 79 Toyota Supra, turned out to be the driveshaft.

Not sure if that helped, but good luck!

Wouldn't an unbalanced driveshaft affect while coasting too? It seems to be more RPM related than speed related...

Could it be clutch chatter?

OK, I re-read your original post a couple times. That does sound like clutch chatter to me as well. If it's only as you are letting out the clutch, then that's my vote. FWIW, my 4R chatters a tad when it's cold and I am just starting out. It's when it starts slipping or when the chatter becomes unbearable that you need to take drastic action. Usually a WOT 3rd to 4th gear shift will result in slippage if the clutch is done. That's one way to test it anyway, at your own risk of course.

I thought maybe u-joints as well, but I just replaced mine, and they were only vibrating at higher speeds, so I don't think that's his problem.

I still think transmission bearing. unless you got a serious rear main leak and oil is saturating your pressure plate and clutch assembly "chatter" shouldn't hang aroung. After a bit of driving and changing gears it should go away. If your bearing was ruined it wouldn't stop unless the clutch was engaged. Engaging the clutch would relieve preasure on that bearing. Thus an easier ride. You mentioned vibration while coasting right? True chatter on a toyota is kinda rare. Its commonaly U-points or transmission bearing. But whetever, Thats only my 2 cents.

I had a problem with vibration in my 87 "only under acceleration". Checked u-joints and they were ok. Twisting the shaft back and forth I found there was way too much play. Rear end was wasted! Scrap yard third member fixed it.

BudBuilt crossmember? IIRC, you have one and had to remove that weighted part from the tranny to install it. Did the vibration happen much later?

I still have the counterweight Rocket.

It was NOT vibrating while coasting. I use past tense because it seems to be much better. I'm driving from Cleveland to Boulder (currently in Morris, IL) with a pretty heavily loaded 4x8 UHaul and the vibration is much better - all I did was run some fuel injector cleaner through it. (Was too rainy before I left for a Seafoaming).

Regardless, I'll be at about 200k miles when I get to CO, and will probably do a clutch anyways. I'll be sure to check the bearings and seals while in there!

Turns out it was a VERY bad u-joint. Replaced it, then heard some growling noise from the rear of the truck - axle seals and bearings ... A lot of money spent on the truck lately - but it runs much better now!
