Transmission?? Vibration/Rumble
Hi All,
First time posting, but I have been visiting this site for years. Great stuff here.
I have a 1996 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4WD with 194K miles. Transmission and drive train seem normal except for one symptom which has stumped me.
There is a loud rumble and strong vibration coming from what I believe is the transmission under very light to neutral load. It is only noticable at highway speeds (above 55 mph or so) and gets worse the faster I am going. At 80 mph the rear view mirror is rendered useless from the vibration. It only occures when I am just starting to give it gas (1st 5% past neutral load or so) or just after all load on the transmission is removed when I let up on the gas. In other words, I have to always either be giving it gas, or have backed off significantly. Otherwise, I get the strong vibration and rumble sound. If I put it in neutral, I can coast just fine without any symptoms. This leads me to believe it is not in the drive shafts, axles, or wheels.
Has anyone ever encountered something similar?
