Toyota Red Coolant

Hey, I've been told to use the red Toyota coolant for my 1984 with 22r. The bottle says not to mix with anything. The directions for my 22r timing chain replacement call for a gallon of Red topped off with distilled water, about 60%red/40% water. Do you guys know what I'm missing?

It's the great Toyota rip-off. Just kidding. Kind of.

I use the red coolant. But now there is pink coolant. Meaning "pre-mixed". So you don't add water. To the red, full strength, yes, you add water. Not to the pink. Which, as far as I know, is replacing the red in most dealerships, for the same price. Half the coolant, same price.

Which is why I say rip-off. But I still buy it...

They only started offering the pink...well I don't know when, but I didn't see it until maybe 4 years ago.

I see what you're saying. So if it said don't dilute, they sold me a bottle of pink and called it red? I specifically asked for red.

It's in the truck now but I thought it was red in the bottle.

That same day, I told the guy I needed an oil drain plug washer for my 1984 pickup with 22r, so he went in the back and brought one out. When I went home and tried to put it didn't fit - not even close.

I just called to ask if they have red coolant in stock and he said yeah. I asked "it's the red, not the pink, right?" and he said "well, it's pink. they don't make red any more." I guess I'll order it online.

I'm learning as I go.

I was lucky enough to have great parts-counter guys at my local dealership. Typically though, from what I hear, you'd better already know what you need before you go in there, and just point them towards it...

I have seen the Toyota Red at my local Car Quest auto parts. I believe they are still making it but it is being phased out...

I am under the impression that the red and pink are not the same extending beyond one being a mix and one being straight. There's a great thread on all of this around Yotatech somewhere.

Yup you guys are right, they are different. I'm gonna get the real 100% red from the Carquest.

Yeah you're right. I did find something a while back with a search. There are some differences in chemical makeup.
