Story I heard was that Mr. Toyoda senior didn't want Americans to mispronounce it so he changed the name of the car company to Toyota. I'd believe that because its not the first time people have changed group names to avoid American pronunciation confusion

Led Zeppelin was originally going to be spelt Lead Zeppelin, but they worried Yanks would call them "Leed Zeppelin"

I heard it was bad luck to name your business after yourself in japan. Not sure though.

heard that too. who knows what Ol' Mr. Toyoda was really thinking... maybe he was just messing with us.
