Problems with my 90 4runner
Ok well where to start.
I just got a 1990 4runner a few days ago and am finding its not very family friendly.
The cup holders are in a horrible spot, and don't hold any types of heavy drinks. So I went out and purchased a set of the drink holders you put in the window ledges trying to fix this problem, and those take up so much room and don't even work.
My wife already hates my new truck and i haven't even owned it a week. She keeps trying to talk me into selling it and getting a different type of SUV or a different newer year of a 4runner that's more comfortable and family friendly.
I also am getting bad gas mileage with it, and i have the 22re.
Aren't they supposed to get better gas mileage than 14mpg????
My mechanic is looking at it today, but he says that's 12-14 is about right because its a heavy body so it needs to use more power to make it move. He has been working on all makes and models of vehicles for 30 years so i am not going to argue with him but it just seems that the 4cly 22re should get better than 12-14 mpg.
I could use some help on these issue if you guys have them or had them and how did you fix them?
Thanks.

everything seems to be inline with your rig. your mechanic is right. your expecting too much out of a 20 year old, 3500 pound truck with a 115hp 4cy motor.

Well when was the last time it had a tune up?
I would think you should get better than that as well.
My v6 4runner when it was stock got 16-18 depending on how i drove it then.
Do you have stock size tires?

I think I found a fix for the leg room problem.
My buddy said he put seats from a dodge neon they fit perfectly and give more leg room because they are a few inches higher. He claimed it was an easy install and you bolt them in and out.
Have you guys heard of this???
I am not sure but if it fixes that problem then i would be willing to do it.
I still however am wondering what to do about the drink holder situation.

If you can afford it, get a 3rd gen 4Runner (96-02) 96-97 can be had as cheap as $4k. More power, better fuel economy (I get 17-20 in my V6) better ride/handling, more refined interior, good cup holders

Now for the issues at hand.
I fixed the issue with the seats. I removed them and custom welded a 2 inch spacing bracket under the seats. They now sit higher and my legs are now able to bend so there is no issue with the leg room now.
As for the cup holders I am thinking about custom welding a cup holder and mounting it to the passengers side dash, but my issue with this is it could be in the way when i go to get in and outta the truck.
Still trying to fix this issue and will let you guys know how it turns out.

Nice. Grab a sense of humor. It might make you tolerable.

Please put pics of your custom cup holders...i'm on the edge of my seat waiting to see this mod! Hehe Seriously? Your on the forum b!tching about cupholders and attacking members for being playful? The term D bag comes to mind but I'm too polite to say it.

Ok first off.... the second gen runners weigh in more than first gens and lil more than pickups... second the 22re works extremely hard wheather you know or not to move that truck toyotas quallity is high but because of this requires beefy parts thus making it heavy... the 31" tires don't help either get lil small and get better MPG.... 14 miles per gallon is not bad.... thats around city too. Your truck is almost 6000 lbs so its expected.... plus first and sec gen runners have a 17 gal tank.... which is pretty big so you figure.... 17X14 is about 240miles to a full tank which is fairly good. and oh yea add about 100 miles on that if you do highway a full tank they get about 20MPG highway. Since you just bought the truck do a full tune-up on it knock out the caddy convertor and get a K&N air filter(which will help by like 1MPG). Its hard to find sec gen runners in 22re anyway so be lucky you got that lol....plus you should know the reliablity of a 22re they can go 200-300k without even as much as a tune-up sometimes...

Wow. Take it easy on jumping on someone like that. Sarchasm & jokes don't always come across so well on the internet, since you can't hear tone of voice or see facial expressions. Give the guy the benefit of the doubt, and if it turns out he really is an a**hole, then you can let him have it. Otherwise you come off as looking like you do right now. No sense of humor and pretty much what you just accused him of being.

Your car does sound normal for a 2gen. no huge change is going to happen unless you fill like dropping some $ on after market parts. You might be better off getting a car... I was really pleased with a 94 honda accord I picked up for 3600 it was great. great on gas very family friendly, AC was very cold and the after market parts are pretty cheep. up to the point I blew the engine racing it. but its up to you I know some people just dont like driving car.
