Overheating after driving without ECT

My '88 3.0 is throwing a code 22 (coolant temperature sensor), so I thought I'd replace the sensor and see what happens. I took the old sensor off then drove maybe 10 minutes to the auto parts store and by the time I got there, the truck was running really hot just under the red line and a bit of coolant had leaked out. Probably not the smartest idea to drive without anything capping the sensor hole but what's done is done...Anyways, picked up the new sensor, and put it in thinking that the overheating was probably because I drove without anything capping where the sensor goes. No such luck though and the truck is still overheating. Never done it before today. And to top it off, it's still throwing code 22 at me. My guess is air got into the system so I'm going to try and bleed it out by idling the truck on a hill without the cap on, but if anyone else has other ideas, I'd love to hear them.

Thanks for reading

Did you replace the correct ECT? One's a sender for the dash gauge and the other's the actual engine coolant temp sensor for the computer. I know I've seen pics and other threads similar to this. Search and you should be able to find which sensor you're looking for.

I would agree with nv4runner. Make sure your replacing the correct coolant temp sensor. Also, have you checked the thermostat? This can also lead to an overheating problem, i would check the flow of the radiator as well. Sounds silly but there is many things that can lead to such a problem. Start with the obvious first and good luck.
