Here's a link to paradise garage....http://neptune.spacebears.com/cars/s.../oil-life.html

They are, at present conducting an ongoing real-world study of the effectiveness and how long synthetic oil will last. They have set certain parameters on each syn oil they use, change the filters at set intervals, run chemical analyses on the oils at set periods (I think weekly) and then post weekly updates on their findings.

Its been very interesting and informative. They have already finished the testing on Mobil 1 and are now in the Amsoil testing process. They top off constantly when oil is low, test for particualtes, metals, viscosity and other data.

One interesting finding so far with the Mobil 1 was that it became a better lubricant after 3,000 miles and seemed to work better.

Check it out. Its been an interesting study to follow. Combined with bob the oil guy I've learned alot about syns.

Toyota OEM and Castrol GTX 5W-30

I used to do all of my vehicles on 2K intervals, but decided to go with 3K intervals on the 4Runner since it's a pain to unbolt the skidplate for the filter. I'll switch to 5K intervals when I hit 15K (next oil change) since the oil still looked pretty clean this time.

I notice that Toyota filters are now made in Malaysia... the first couple I bought were made in Japan.

For my the car I've owned for 4 years now which is my first and all
my families daily drivers I change their oil and use Pennzoil with
Puralator filters and try to do it before 3,000 miles. I haven't had any engine problems with any of them. But they are all American made cars. I just bought this Toyota truck and wondering why nobody uses this combination
or atleast not Pennzoil in their yotas.. I've heard a lot about Amsoil.. How
much does it typically cost? Thanks.

I have been using Mobil1 5w30 and Mobil1 filter and change oil every 6k miles. I have been using that combination on my 92 Accord for the past 4 years topping 130k, right now the car has 240k miles and it still run like a 80k honda with no oil leak whatsoever, not even a drop anywhere near the oil pan. I am using amsoil series 2000 and amsoil filter on my other Accord and my 4Runner. Have put 8000++miles on my runner, oil still look pretty clean..so far so good!!

Nothin touches my 1991 4x4 pickup except Mobil 1 10w30 and Toyota OEM oil filters. Truck doesnt burn a lick of oil...looks the same after 2500 miles as the day I poured in from the bottle.

Expensive, but I get the oil for free

I run Valvoline full synth 10w30 and Ive been trying different filters (mobile one, OEM, Fram tough guard...). And change every 4500 miles or so.

If you are running dino oils than you should change your oil every 3000 miles or so, but on synthetic you can go maybe 7000 without any adverse viscosity breakdown IF you have a the proper filtration or change filters. (with some oils in my Integra I could actually tell the viscosity had lowered it felt thinner when I drained it)

With japanese engine tolerances being so tight, midway through the engine life cycle there really much debris to be filtered (comparativey to other engines) My oil comes out at 5000 miles very clean (and I drive hard), despite wich filter I use.

I might stick with OEM, I havent seen any advers oil affects from it. Or just keep switching it.

Syn-oil

I'm pure one and Castrol syn every 3-5K on my 87 4x4. My guess is I'm wasteing a lot of money. I had a car that I switched at 100K to castrol syn 5w-50. It was a car I preferred to die so I only changed oil and filter once per year at 15-20k. My plan was to be sorry and kill it. At 310,000 I parked it with no engine problems and a quart between changes.
