Mounting gas can to spare tire

Mounting gas can to spare tire
I toyed with the idea of putting a fuel can on the roof rack of my FJ Cruiser like I had it on the '91 4Runner.
I have all the Yakima brackets to do this, and all I would have to pick up is the base for the can.

However I may go for a roof top tent, and the two would not work with each other.
I have seen cans on the back of a spare tire, and seeing this mount, it looks like it may only work with a full size 5 gallon can.
Mine is a 2.5 gallon can, and may not work with the tall bracket unless the top part of the mount will lower enough.

The above part would then bolt to this part that attaches to your 3 lug nuts on your spare tire.

They have the correct Toyota pattern too which is 6-5.5.
I could go for the 5 gallon can, only thing that is the weight of the can, the brackets, and 40 lb of fuel hanging off the tire.
I think 20 lb of fuel (2.5 gallon can) would fare better.
Anyone done a mount like this, and if so did it hold up OK?
Pictures if you have done it?

Scratch this idea.
After more research, it will work, but Con Ferr maker of the jerry can racks quit a few years ago.

As far as I know, no one else makes the same setup listed above.
I may have to go with the roof mount after all.
PS, all may not be lost.

Yeah, it is a Hummer site, but it seems a company purchased the tooling rights to continue to make some of Con Ferrs gear.
I will have to look into it.

I'm pretty sure that 2.5 gallons of gas is about 15 pounds or so, max. For the record, I have a 91 4Runner with the factory rear mounted spare and have had my bike rack mounted to it with two mountain bikes (one chromoly frame, one aluminum) with no problems.

15 lb does not seem like to much.
Still scrapping the idea with the mount that sits outside of the spare tire, as it is made only for a Blitz can.
That brand of cans are not known to seal well.
My can is the Wedco NATO cans, they do not leak and are super safe.
Here is a link to them.

Mine is the shorty 10 liter one.
What I am thinking is I can get the spare tire mount, then bolt to that bracket one of the trays like this one.
What I can also do is hit up a local fabber I went to years ago who made me a small rollbar for the back of the '91 4Runner that held my Powertank.
It can have a tube that will slide on and off with bolt holes on it so I do not have to leave the jerry can tray on the back all the time.
Or maybe he can come up with a new mount to hold a 10 and 20 liter can, then get it all powdercoated in black for a stealthy look.
Gotta find out if he is still in business though.

Let's see, the can is what, 5 lbs?
Fuel weighs in at ~8 lbs/gal. so 5 gal is 45 lbs.
So your hanging 50lbs out there.
I would still be more afraid of the impact in a rear end collision than anything else.
