military trailer and expedition use

just spotted a military trailer with the chain like recieving point where it used Rings like a chain.

http://cgi.govliquidation.com/auctio...tionId=1180031

Starting bid is like 50 bucks, Their are several on the website like this, my bro did it to me again where I discussed it with him and hes like DO IT (ill fab up a frame work around the trailer) all the time he gets me into trouble with mods first a turboed 4runner (which will happen) and now this trailer setup.

going to do a dual tire carrier where it sits two 33s in a tube seating for the spares.

gonna build some type of grill onto this and have a removable top so I can store stuff on long trips (mainly to put my crap in when I go out to Colorado State) and other stuff.

a trailer for 100 bucks, a jeep trailer from the 50s, however its a bit smaller though dunno if it would work for me or not.

actually i read it wrong, its a 100 bucks for the cover, they are running like 1200 on ebay, so the big trailer it is for me since i can prob get it for 150 to 200

then their is the m416 trailer

find one beat up to hell and just repaint it and fix it up for a camping type situation.

most likely if I can find the 416, we will build some sort of shell for it, maybe big enough to get in side. strong enough to put a Eezi Awn or Overland setup on top and use the inside for getting warm and maybe a table to play (cards whatever, eating) I just dont know where to look for one as far as auctions go. the gov auction had bigger trailers, well I think they would be too big for my setup purposes.

Don't get those first ones, they are huge. Way too big for a 4runner or landcruiser for that matter. I have a M416 and love it. Last summer took it from CA to northern MN and on the way back toured CO with it.
Recent trail test and to see how it did on washboards

Hard to see but flexing it

MN, CO trip

Paid 300 bones for it, wired up some lights, new tires, and a cover so far. Eventually gas can carriers, hard top, roof top tent, water tank, and possibly cut a tailgate. The reason for no tail gate, they will float loaded with 500 lbs. If you have the $$$$ buy a new or nearly new canadian one.

stiff axle for the floating or does the suspension not handle 500 pounds? kinda confused. Im also looking into the m101's as welll which i think are the same size but a bit newer. I like the front mounted spare, I was thinking about doing a dual mounted spare for the trailer and my 4runner. what do the tires measure out to in diameter? I may end up getting some 33x12.50 and some 15 inch steelies for it.

hmm, i like this idea, i would enjoy having a small/cheap trailer to use for expedition type use. dont have the funds for a campa and i havent been able to find a junker old pick up to create a trailer out of the bed section of it.

Sorry, they will float in a water crossing. They have two drain plugs on the bottom and no tailgate so that the trailer will float in a water crossing if needed with up to 500 lbs in it.

My front mounted spare didn't work well offroad, could work with some fabbed brackets. The tires are slightly taller than 31" (at least the truck tires I have on there). I wouldn't go with 33x12.5's, go with 10.5s or 9.5s. You could still use them as spares in a pinch, also the wider tire would make it harder to manuever by yourself. Even fully loaded, I can move it around a flat driveway by myself, the wide tires would make that a little harder. I do plan on switching to some matching steelies and I have a set of 2piece wheel adapters that will change the bolt pattern from 5on5.5 to 6on5.5. I could just swap hubs from a trailer place, but I would lose my parking brake and that thing is just too cool.

Also, with 33's these things are tall! With the trailer on 31's, the pintle ring in the lower slot, and my 4runner on 33's, it is pretty much straight across to my hitch. If I put it on 33's I will have to raise my pintle back up like in the CO pic where the 4runner was on 31's.

The american M101's are huge, while the canadian M101's are a newer copy of the M416

Im not interested in the enclosed but for someone without a roof tent not a bad idea. I like the chaser trailers but dont want to pay the cash $4k-$10k.Ouch. They are nice but I can build something similar for less. I figure if I start with a m416 this would be a perfect platform for camping and adventuring. I do get tired of having to hav someone help me put on and take off my mammoth hannibal roof tent.

About the hitch, that "ring chain type thing" is actually called a pintle hitch. You can get a combination - ball & pintle or just the regular hook & loop type; here is a link to both types so you can see them:

http://www.reese-hitches.com/pintle_hooks.html

I would recommend getting the combination hitch instead of cutting the tongue of the trailer & installing a crappy sheet metal ball type on it. If you did cut the trailer & replace the tongue; replace it with a "Bulldog" type hitch:

yeah I didnt know what a pintle style was until I started reading up. it also used a lintel as well I think.

Aaron- chaser is built off the m101 and m416 platform, so yeah 5k for the trailer is really the suspension they used and the custom design extras. I just cant afford to pay 6k, i dont think i saw one for 4k.

a 416 in bad shape will bring 200-300 bucks, a 416 in decent shape should not exceed 800, one in perfect shape shouldnt exceed 1400.

thats the prices ive seen. I plan to use gov liquidation to get mine. gonna call my uncle (ex army) to see what his thoughts are on one.
