I'm doing a HG replacement, and i'm in the middle of tearing the engine down.
It's a 91 pickup 3.0 3vze.
I need to take off the CAMSHAFT timing pulleys. My friend fabbed up a tool to hold the pulley in place with a really long handle. We have tried to loosen the bolts, but those stupid things are NOT coming loose!!!
is there anything that i'm missing?
is the bolt reverse threaded?


how do i get this damn thing off????
it sucks that i've gotten this far and i'm stuck because of two bolts.

Throw any PB blaster on there? An how long is your friends breaker bar. You might need something longer for more torque.

More importantly... What the heck are you doing up so late replacing headers?

i WAS trying to get the headgasket done before this weekend...
but i was way wrong on that one. hopefully i'll have it done by next weekend.
oh, and our handles are surely long enough. around 4 feet lol. we actually broke an extension and stripped a socket.

what is pb blaster and where can i get it?

How about some good old elbow grease? And scream"Arnold!!!" while you try turning it...

But like Molly said, soak it a couple times with PB Blaster.

No offense guys, but dont waste your time with PB blaster. YOu could soak it for days, and it wont soak down to the threads.

Put socket on it, rest the driver/breaker bar against the frame and blip the starter. It will loosen the bolt right up.

btw it is NOT reverse threaded

btw you said crankshaft. Did you mean camshaft? There is only one pulley on the crank, while each camshaft has one (two total)

I think that's for the crank pulley... although that tip works very slick.

Edit: Deathcougar corrected this already.

I took a 12mm socket and an extension and placed that on one of the bolt heads on the timing belt cover... through a spoke of the wheel on the chamshaft sprocket... if you can visualize that.

Anyway, that wedged the sprocket still and allowed me to use on heck of a cheater bar to get the bolts out. As I describe it, you need two people. One to block the sprocket, and one to turn the stubborn bolt.

For the camshaft, follow the same guidelines for taking off the crank bolt, only dont blip the starter, just let it rest against the frame, and loosen the cam bolts before taking off the timing belt. The timing belt will hold the setup still, and the socket/breaker will hold the crank still

i guess we are gonna have to try to soak it with pb blaster, then just yell "ARNOLD!!"
we were yelling "MARTHA!!"
maybe that's why it wouldn't come loose

If you really want them to come off... yell "THIS... IS.... SPARTA!!!!" and then dramatically kick your breaker bar in a counter clockwise direction.

I can send you the 300 DVD if that would help. Like D.C. said PB blaster prolly won't get in there but it might be the nudge you need. TC and I have have great luck with soaking stuck stuff with PB Blaster 4 times over a day and then the next day breaking it loose. You can get PB blaster at any automotive or hardware store.


Or you can just buy me a plane ticket and I'll fly up there and fix it for ya...

ok.. we finally got them off.


i went out and got a brand new socket, sprayed it with some pb blaster, and it came off with no problems today.

gotta love the 6ft breaker bar and pulley holder


and here is my buddy with the tool he made me to show you a comparison in size

Wow... two 6' long monster breaker bars and that little pulley bolt just came right off? Imagine that.
