Help with fluids for diffs & xfer case on '98 Tacoma TRD
Hello!
My '98 Tacoma XtraCab TRD Limited has 103k miles on it, and I'm moving forward with most major services I can do, to make sure it keeps running forever nicely! I've been reading the forums on diff & xfer case fluids, and I still have a few questions.
I live in Lake Tahoe, so 4WD snow performance as well as 0-25 degree F performance is important to me. Summertime gets us over 100F for a week, but winter can stay below freezing for weeks. I don't do any offroading (intentionally), and my goal is driveability and long-life reliability.
Here's my plan:
Manual Transmission: Redline MT-90
Xfer case: Redline 75W90NS
Front Diff: Redline 75W90NS
Rear Diff: Redline 75W90NS (or, 75W90?)
The MT-90 gets great reviews, so it was an easy choice for the transmission.
I believe the only difference between the two redline oils is the friction modifiers for limited slip differentials (LSDs). Since the xfer case & front diff don't have LSDs in them, the 75W90NS is a good choice.
Now, here's why I get stuck:
* What type of rear diff do I have in my truck?
* Would 75W90 or 75W90NS be a better choice for that particular diff? (Summit didn't seem to have 75W90 on the shelf, so I could head to Kragen and get Mobile 1 75W90 if it has friction modifiers.)
* I'm a little worried about seal leak moving to synthetic after 100k. However, I think fears of leaking seals may be overblown, and I would value good cold weather performance.
Anyways, if you could help point a beginner in the right direction, I'd appreciate it!

Hey, I live in Carson and work in South Lake, what area are you in? Switching to Synthetic won't cause a leak unless there is a curent issue with the seals. I believe I have 80-90 in mine, can't remember.

I just got an email from Redline, and here's what they recommended:
Manual Transmission: Redline MT-90
Xfer case: Redline MT-90

I'm getting ready for a full tranny/diff sevincing and I'm going full Redline fluids. I used 'em in my Eclipse for over 7 race seasons and they really did a good job protecting the tranny parts from wear and tear of drag racing.

I'm also getting ready to do all of the fluid changes. I am going to go with all Toyota OEM fluids. In my sports cars/bike, I use Motul/Amsoil/Royal Purple, but for this daily driver, regular fluids should be more than sufficient.

I changed over to synthetic in the diffs, transfer case, and transmission at 110,000 miles with no problems whatsoever. I initially used Amsoil for everything and later had to drain the transmission and put in the Redline MT-90 because it wasn't shifting so good with the Amsoil. The Redline works great in the transmission, so you are off to a good start.
If you are doing it yourself, it will be easier if you are in a heated environment like a carport/garage. I did mine in November on a cold day and it took longer than it should because the oil was hard to pump.
