The big question, 2007 4runner or FJ Cruiser
Usage will include daily driving as well as frequent road trips to unhospitable areas. How does the 4runner hold up to the cruiser?

What do you mean?
If you're really gonna 'wheel it, I would go with the FJ, just because it's less expensive and shorter wheelbase.
If it's just dirt roads, either will do fine, the 4runner will be more posh in the Daily driving duties.

The FJ will get you deeper because of the ability to lock the rear differential (if you get it) and still maintain the ATRAC.
This doesn't mean much once you start modifying your vehicle as you can easily add a rear locker to the 4runner and be the same. Though the ATRAC on the FJ has been tuned a little differently but pretty much the same (I'd say it's like a version 2.1 vs 2.0).
Suspension: virtually identical (some minor geometry differences but we're talking minor).

Have you sat in an FJ yet? It is like driving from inside a cave. You cant even see the stop lights at an intersection, without leaning forward to look up.
This type of thing would be a problem with the daily drive. It also cuts down your view of the outdoors, when offroading. If it were not for that one issue, I would have an FJ. They look cool; but that is a deal-breaker.
