if youre going with the CO2 setup, you might want to consider nitrogen (N2) it doesnt hold as much water (none actully) and it should be just as cheap

i would have sliders made that are all one chamber and put a NPT fitting or two in them. You will be able to hold more than you think with that setup. 4crawler has this option. As long as the tubes are drilled prior to welding you have a good setup. I would probally convert mine, but they werent drilled.

Haveing storage is great, but unless you use it all the time go 3-5 gals, or sliders...and a good pump, they best and biggest you can afford/fit.

I would think so, but I always see them valve up. Does the CO2 turn to liquid in the tank?

Can't hold near the amount of N2 in the same size tank as CO2, because the CO2 will be compressed to liquid. Nitrogen is better for the tires too.

Bad info here.
DO NOT operate a CO2 tank on its side.
Dangerous!!!

Look up the info at www.powertank.com
Also look in the mounting link I provided earlier, and you will see Chris Geiger has a tank on its side, but PT notes that Chris does not operate it on its side.

Nitro is not as good as CO2 when it comes to filling tires.
Racers at the track use Nitro, CO2 has been proven better for off roaders.
Look on www.powertank.com for more info.

Ric; 4WD Toyota Owner magazine did a very thorough article on air setups in their first issue. I still have it laying around somewhere, I'll dig it up for you.

PTs site was down earlier, but I just got in.
Taken from their FAQ page:

Q: “Is the CO2 gas safe for tires?”
A: Yes. CO2 vapor is inert (non-toxic, non-corrosive). CO2 vapor is perfectly safe for your tires and wheels. In fact, your body exhales CO2 and you ingest CO2 when you drink a soda or beer.
Q: “Why CO2 instead of Nitrogen?”
A: "Volume". CO2 will give you three times the energy of Nitrogen in a given tank size. Having one tank of CO2 is like carrying three tanks of nitrogen. This makes it more economical and means that you’ll have the power when you need it all in one small tank.
