32x11.50 vs 31x10.5 - Pros and Cons ?

My 93 SR5 4WD came with 31x10.5 from the factory and is geared for the 31x.

After a road trip to West "By God" Virginia this weekend, I have decided to invest a little more money in the truck as it is a perfectly acceptable vehicle for the 430 mile round trip to the ski resort (where I have a part time job).

I am running Dueller A/T's now (came with truck) and they were decently quiet and comfortable.

But, I have been giving 32s a lot of thought already this week especially as my 85 F-150 needs tires and the 31s would be perfect on that.

I am lifted around 1.5" all round and already running slightly greater offset on my rims so I am thinking 32s would clear fine. I will be upfront here and say that after seeing the truck parked a lot this weekend, as nice as it looks, I would really like to fill the fenders a little more and have a little more meat. (thjere, I said it)

For reference, here it is on 31s....

Fender fill...

So, what say you, the fine and upstanding men and women of Yotatech ?
Yay or Nay

I had 32 in BFG MT and AT tires on my 2nd Gen for about 10 years and loved them! My truck has the V6 and *had* the 4.56 gears (5-speed) and I thought the 32's were a perfect match and I got fantastic mileage IMO. (17 to 20 highway)
You will need 15X8 wheels with 4 5/8ths backspacing for them to tuck nicely into the wheelwells with 2 in coils and torsion bar adjustment (along with a 4 wheel alignment)

BTW, the way you have your Yakima screen mounted will crack it. It needs the support of a windshield for strength. (I went through 3 of them mounted just as you have yours) and finally just pulled it off. I found that while it looks good, it actually does not really affect mileage in a measureable way.

Thanks for all the info..

5 speed and 4.56's here too. Yak screen was mounted to bar when I mounted bar to truck so just left it there being lazy... it does make a wicked vibrating sound also.

Just need a deal on some 32 ATs.

Thanks again,

David

P.S. Where is the link to your site ?

Why not 33x10.50? Fill out wheelwells very nicely!

i am running 32X11.5X15 on my truck and i think they are a great size you get bigger looks without haveing to re-gear

ehh ok maybe not a great example the pic makes em look small but i real life even though i could fit bigger because of the 6" lift i think they look pleanty big compares to my dad's 31x10's

I think 33 x 10.50's would be a better tire for your application. Reason being they are a little narrower than the 32 x 11.5's so you'll have a bit better "bite" in the snow. I would look at the BFG A/T's b/c they are winter rated and look awesome.

BTW, love the looks of your 4runner...the colour is good too. MInd you it's the same colour as my truck.

The Dunlop RVXT also available in 33x10.5 is also winter rated with the snowflake in the mountain symbol. Also, with a wider tire you're adding more resistance because there is a bigger footprint. After switching from 33x12.5's to 33x10.5's, the truck really feels different. It seems peppier, partially due to the large decrease in weight.

I run the RVXT too - seems to work really well in about all conditions.

Great info !

Thanks.

I am gonna stick with 32's as I do not want to pound on pinch welds, re-gear or lose my front mud flaps.

But the 33 x10.5 sound interesting.

I'm running 32x11.50's and I loved them until I put the fj80 coils on... wish I could upgrade to a 33x12.50. The 33x10.50's imo look way to skinny when mounted and make the vehicle look a tad funny.

If you're talking about losing those things as a result of "rubbing," remember that rubbing also results from width of tire and not neccessarily diameter all the time.

I have a buddy who runs 33 x 10.5 on this pickup with a 3" body lift. He says power wise it's fine. He says it takes maybe a little longer to get up to speed, but considering he still has 4.56 gears (he's got the 5 speed) the still help the engine produce lots of torque to turn the bigger tires. With his 3" lift he clears the tires and has plenty of room to burn. And they look great.

Remember, we're also only talking about 1/2" more diameter, on the 33's (1/2" on either side of the wheel).

yes you can fit 32s on your 89 with a slight lift that you have. what gears do you have??

Did your truck come with 31s stock? 4.56-4.88 gears would be optimal for 32-33s.

I'm going to say that you need to go with 33x10.50's. All i did was put a perf. prod. rear spring in mine and cranked my torsion bars. They only rub when fully turned and one side hits hard over something. You don't need to pound out pinch welds or anything, it fits fine. It also seems like my runner now has more useable power now, and definetly doesn't want to spin the wheels too much in slick conditions. No need to regear on mine, basically. As for losing your front mudflaps, I don't know, I never had any.

Also, the extra sidewall really feels great on bad roads, really absorbs a lot.

stock gears...stock alloys...30s or 31s i think i have now...but i put in aal's and i got 3 inches out of the rear...now since i got to replace the tires anyway...i'm going to get the t-bars crnked to level it out and an alingmet...but i might as well get new tires too becuse they'll do the t-bars and alingment for free...so i can fit 32s???if so how wide???
