I want to get an oil pressure gauge for my truck and I'm trying to decide between an 80 psi gauge or a 100 psi gauge. Generally it's easier to read and slightly more accurate if your gauge doesn't go too far over your peak readings.

From memory, I believe the manual mentions that the lowest acceptable psi is 4.3 and at 3000 I can expect to see between 36-71 psi.
By doing a few google searches I see that not many people are reporting pressure readings of 80 psi or over.

On a fresh engine with a good oil pump what's the peak pressure I can expect to see if I were turning 5000 rpm with 20-50 oil?

So what do ya think, 80 or 100?

I think mine are 0 to 100 psi

On cold mornings with 20/50 down around 0 F I would see between 60 to 80 psi till the oil warmed up.

I see the same pressures with 5/30 in the 3.4

Then all my gauges sit on the dash so I can read them with my old eyes.

Dang, you tough on the old girl making her circulate molasses in the winter lol

It rarely gets down to the single digits over here. When the cold season comes around I'd be switching to something like 10-30 or 10-40.

Miscellaneous info about gauge installs I found on the net:

"Here's how you can use both the idiot light and an aftermarket gauge. Works great. Put your new sending unit in place of the old idiot light sending unit. Then run a wire from the new sending unit your aftermarket gauge.

Find the little alternative oil port plug that is located inside the passenger motor mount. Assuming it's a 22R motor. Because the 22R has two alternative places to bolt motor mounts, they had to include an alternative oil pressure port. It currently has a screw in plug. Unscrew that plug. Your stock idiot light will just fit inside the motor mount, because it's fairly small. Then mount the stock wire to the stock idiot light sensor.

Larger aftermarket sensors will likely not fit inside the motor mount, so that's why it's probably easier to relocate the idiot light sender there.

It's a good idea to have the idiot light, because it's a helluva lot more noticeable than a gauge is."

Because of the BSP threads a thread adapter will almost always be needed to run aftermarket gauges.

I used the second port on the block, under the engine mount. Idle PSI is usually around 20psi. Here is all that I used:


1/8 BSP to 1/8NPT
1/8NPT 90deg adapter
1/8 NPT to 4AN
4AN 4ft Braided line
4AN to 1/8NPT
1/8NPT to 1/8 copper tube compression
about 3 ft of copper tube
1/8 compression to back of gauge.

What can I say but this reminds me of a story about the Corn Flake trucks the dash had 3 lights and a speedometer .

Standard issue was a roll of electrical tape light came on tape the light up and keep going.

I suppose if your the type that likes lights a low oil pressure light might be a good idea.

I like my mechanical oil pressure gauges .

Looking they are the 0 to 100 Psi I try and use all the same gauges across the fleet so they all have the same scale.

Myself I do a sweep of the gauges and look in the rear view mirrors every minute or so unless the auto pilot is engaged !!
