Where to get R-12 Refridgerent???
#22
I just converted mine to 134a after my compressor gave up, working fine.
1) All you really need for conversion is new access valves and new collector. Buy a packet of gaskets and some sealants at the same time. I also put in an inline filter. Total time (not including my mechanic putting in the compressor) < 1 hr.
2) Would recommend ACKits.com for the parts -- they are great, honest, very helpful.
3) The issue with R12 + R134 IS NOT gas incompatibility -- it's that the oils mixed in with them can be incompatible and cause "black death" of your compressor. If you are putting in a new compressor (which you should be if you are running the original and the clutch is shot, because the bearings are next), you can fill it with the proper oil and do the conversion very easily.
4) Legitimate R12 is nearing $100/pound, and you have a leak somewhere ... refilling it ain't likley worth it. I learned this the hard way!

I just recently acquired some r-12 on e-bay. It was 4 cans of r-12 and a can of oil for 120.00
Had my mechanic evacuate, vacum test and input new r-12. The ac blows super cold. Freeze your ya ya's off.
there is other stuff called Freeze-12 which is comapatable with r-12. There is no oil incampatibility and it can be mixed with r-12. Call around to shops to see if they have it. Great alternative to the real thing.
