yeah big ol trucks are great in the mud simply because they have much stronger stock running gear so they can handle bigger tires well, in reality little light weight yotas do awesome in the mud because they are so light they can just float across the stuff as long as the tires have enough beef to push them. I hate big old fords and chevys that go muddin over their head and get stuck those things sink like bricks and guess who always has to go pull them out in the taco on bald 33's lol.

Get that little 85, gusset the crap out of the front and rear axles, swap the birfs for some longs, get chromoly shafts in the back, gear it really low and slap some pitbulls or boggers or TSL's on there. I love Chevy trucks a lot as well but if you wana run trails aswell they are simply too big to be practical in a lot of situations. Ive seen toyotas with stock 22RE's dominate in mud drag also. besides man if its all about havin fun id just get a truck and get into it and find out for yourself how it works

Don't use a solid axle truck for this. Stock IFS and the stock solid axle that came on the 79-85 trucks rival eachother in strength. IFS has much more clearance, best thing for getting through those ruts that the trucks with 44"s dig. A solid axle will just plow the pumpkin into the dirt.

use a IFS rig, they are usually cheaper too Lock it front and rear and re-gear it to the tires you want.

Or, weld the rear, lock the front and toss a chevy v8. They are cheap and offer decent power.

I would go IFS if this wasnt going to be my main trail rig too...

I also would throw a big chevy in there, but i dont know how hard that would be.. I also dont have the time or money...

Ill probably stick with racing a yota. And if it doesnt work out in the mud, ill still have a killer trail rig!

Is there anything wrong with shedding weight? (doors, tailgate/bed, ect?)

I plan on either bobbing, or taking off the bed anyways...

well, ifs has more ground clearence for a second until you compress your suspension when coming into a mudhole to fast, then you loose most of it.
plus when drag racing threw mud the ifs gets packed full of mud and gets real heavy and then it sags real bad until you get all that mud out of there.
ifs is for pavement pounders. if you want to race your 85 heres what you do.

1. boggers/swampers
2. lock up the rear diff only! "makes stearing easier"
3. shed some wait, just make shure it still looks like a truck.
4. you must have a quick left foot and a heavy right foot.
5. wind her piss tight and blow peoples doors off!

I know plenty of people that would disagree with the comment "ifs is for pavement pounders". While its a fact that solid front axle is better all around for wheeling, and I agree. I've schooled plenty of solid axle rigs in an ifs, and I certainly don't only pound pavement.

I really need to get a few videos of my buddy's 85 4runner. With a built 22R-E, 5speed, 5.71s, spooled rear, lockered front, and 38" boggers, it mud bogs like nobody's business. He built it mainly to take on many different types of terrain, but mud is by far the most of what you see in middle Georgia. It has no problem creating quite a tall rooster tail as it tears out through the mud.
Also, another idea might be to go as high horsepower with smaller tires. A guy I know won this mud competition in Florida a few years ago with a Ford Ranger with as little weight as possible, a 460, and 33" cut boggers. He literally skimmed the surface the entire way and won while others simply bogged down!!
BTW, running Boggers in the rear with either TSL's or LTB's in the front also helps out in steering and handling if you drive this thing much at all.
