It's a high pinion
Seriously, with helical gears, the pinion can't be right at the centerline of the ring gear. Low pinion puts it below the centerline, high pinion puts it above the centerline. Obviously, HP has better ground clearance and usually better driveline angles.
High pinion gearsets are approx 30% stronger in the FRONT axle than low pinion because the teeth engage on the drive side instead of the coast side. HP diffs are WEAKER in rear applications for the same reason.
