Headlights work, but they wont turn on.

I am not sure whether anyone else has had these problems and I appoligize if I'm going over the same old ground, I can understand how annoying that would be.

I have a 91 22RE reg cab/long box 4X4 truck as my daily driver/off roader and was wondering if anyone had any tips of hints as to what may be causing my head lights to flicker on/off randomly? I was driving home and my head lights just randomly shut off then came on 5-10 min later and did this randomly through out the drive home. Then they shut off and have never came back on.

A week later...
I figured to check the relay. I poped the cap off everything looked ok (I'm no specialist), so I taped the contacts together and only put the relay back in when driving at night. THis means that My head lights are on all the time if I have the relay in, so when I park I pull it out.
Since then I have checked the bulbs, and wires/connections going out of the headlamp bulbs and they seem to be in good condidtion. I have even tried swapping the light switch and the entire steering control/turn signal mechnism out and still nothing with an untaped relay in the fuse box. So for now I just pop the taped relay in when driving at nihgt and pull it out when I park.

I would like to know if there is a common place where there is a short circuit, or where to look for trying to find the missing connection? I think it lies somewhere in between the fuse box (under the hood) and the signal switch in the cab. Where may I be able to find the wires in the truck?

Thanks, any help is much appreciated!

factory wiring diagram is extremely helpful at times such as these. Im waiting for mine to arrive any day now after getting it off Ebay... for my 89 pickup.
If your headlight relay is not pulling in, and the ground signal from the stalk switch is getting to the relay, and you know the relay coil is good, then the source to the relay is interrupted.
if you get to digging around with an ohm meter make sure to disconnect your battery before taking apart your fuse terminal under the hood. most likely the problem is in there.

Check the headlight/combo switch, likely you have some dirty contacts on it:

response to 4Crawler

thanks for the link, that clarified alot. especially since the lights would flicker on and off seldomly. just to double check you meant the light switch knob/turn signal when you refer to the combination swtich. inother words thats what I gotta dissasemble and clean up.

Thanks for your time

Yes, that is what the factory service manual calls the combination (combo) switch, since it is a combination of the on/off switch and the low/high/flash switch.

ok so I finally got some time to trace the wire that was short circuiting. it was a red wire with a red tracer, can easily be found on in the loom infront of the radiator. I followed it back from the fuse panel back under the dash and lost it and could not figure out what or even where it went/or what wire it turned into.

Instead of all that fuss, I decided to wire in a new from the power wire in the combo switch, under the steering shaft, through the fire wall and back into the loom and into the fuse box, where the relay wasnt getting power to turn the lights on. by the looks of the wiring diagram, it looks ok, as the fuses are still within the circuit.-what i am trying to say is the wire that I taped into the fuse box underneath the relay terminal is still wired throught the fuses so I wont fry anything expensive. it goes from the low voltage wires to the high voltage circuit, which has the fuses.
Am I correct? I am fairly certain, but just want to ask someone with a greater knowledge of electrcal issues.
thanks
