Gas Mileage

Hello everyone. I'm new to toyotas, so bear with me. I have had the toyota for about two weeks now. Its got the 3.0 V6 and it gets horrible mileage. I was just wondering if there is anything I can do to improve mileage, stuff that that doesn't cost a whole lot you know. Well actually I'm open to any suggestions. I heard that leaveing the tailgate open increases mileage but not sure if it is true. Thanks Brian.

headers, intake, easy on the gas, smaller tires, 5 speed, keeping RPMs under 3k, check for vacuum leaks... etc etc. I have a 3vze with headers and a full exhaust. I get about 240 miles to a tank, if I baby it. 210-220 ish if I rev it high.

What is your gas milage now? You might be getting the normal milage for that engine and just think its low. Also weight helps alot. Only about 5% of the power used by the engine is to actually move you. The other 95% is moving the weight of the vehicle. So less weight, more milage. But also the things listed above help.

Make sure the air filter is clean, and the tire pressure is right also. Just regular stuff to check none the less.

I've got a 3.0 4runner as well and I can get 250 miles to a tank if I really conserve. I get about 220 normally though. There's a bunch of things you can do but none of them will yield huge results. The tire pressure, air filter, and weight are good places to start. And I'd probably do the ISR mod and a good tune-up as well. If you're willing to fork over about $700 you can get headers, and if you don't mind smaller tires, then you could do that too.

you gotta think about the fact that a 4runner has a curb weight of 5400 lbs. thats a lot of frickin truck for a 150 hp motor. i get about 200 miles to a tank, and i usually have 2 gallons left. with headers and longer durration cams and an intake. yes the 3.suck gets bad mileage its just the way of things, and the 'TPS unplugged mod' and 'TB grove cuts mod' are both bougus, don't waste your time with them. one of the key things here is your right foot.

I usually fill about 15 gallons. I got a 17 gallon tank so there's about 2 left when my gauge shows empty.

So that's right around 15 mpg, which isn't too bad considering its the 3vze, but I'm always wishing it was better.

Oh and it's pretty much stock as far as performance mods and weight go.

Don't buy headers, there's no real proof you'll see an increase in MPGs plus you'll likely never recoup the money invested. Light on the pedal and tire pressure are really the only things that will help the 3.slo.

^^^ after buying headers for a 3.0, im gonna have to disagree with you. I get 240 miles per tank if I baby it, and 217 ish if I rev it high. before headers, I saw 220 ish if I babied it and 180 if I reved it high. Recouping the money invested? who cares. my truck sounds extremely unique. and about 3-4 times a week, I get a random person that has driven a Yota in his lifetime asking me if I swapped motors out and I love seeing the look on their faces when I tell them its still the 3.0 with headers and a fully custom exhaust.

You're in the minority but I'd be curious to see a dyno on a similarly equipped truck and see where the headers are opening up power but I bet more of the gain is atributed to the exhaust than the headers.

I too would love to see a dyno...but don't headers also eliminate one of the alleged causes for HG failure? they should reroute the exhaust so it doesn't all culminate around the 6th (i think?) cylinder. not positive about that, cause i don't have headers!

anyways, to the original OP, if you're getting anywhere between 12-20 that's probably normal. do a tune up, check your tire pressure, go light on the accel, get a manual tranny those are the best gas mileage "mods" for this engine. people also recommend a good cat back exhaust. you should see a noticeable increase in HP and mileage. MaK92-4RnR, i'm waiting for you to link him to your thread

me too, before headers & exhaust i was getting around 180 a tank, after i was getting 200. also, in therory one of the benifits of longer durration cams is they make a motor more efficent by opening the exhaust valve a little later, but i have seen no evidence of this helping my MPG's and i can't say that ISR mod does anything too.
