front diff burning up

front diff burning up

My front diff smokes and smells like oil sometimes when i use the 4wd. it stopped doing for about a month, then it just started doing it again. so now i changed out the oil in it and it worked for a day, but then today it started smoking again. the 4wd is actually working but its smoking and smells alot. does anyone have any ideas. thanks

or they are wearing out from not enough oil and you can smell the oil left boiling...

Sure it's filled up enough? It's kinda a PITA to fill ... need to spin the gears a bit and then fill it some more...

What did the oil look like when you drained it out?

What type/weight oil did you fill with?

Sorry I can't help diagnose your problem, but if in the end you determine there is a major problem with your diff, I've got one available.

Check the fluid level.

Honestly - is your engine leaking on the diff? All that oil will burn off when the diff gets hot.

thanks for all the input guys, but i found out that its not even my diff at all, its the cv axles burning up because all the grease came out of the boots. so im gonna replace the cv axles probably this week. i also found out my #2 piston is only running at 70 while the rest are at 150. good thing i was planning on buying a new performance engine within the next year, but i guess the week engine will do for now.

Good news. Make sure to get replacements with a lifetime warranty as you will probably have to do this again at some point.
