Question Engine Swap

I just received a 1990 4Runner from my brother. Everything is in great shape besides the engine. The engine, when I got it started, has a knock in the #4 piston. The motor is the original 22RE. I was trying to decide whether to replace the engine with another 22RE, or swap engines for a V6.

I need opinions to decide which is more desirable. Anyone that has an opinion, please feel free to help me decide. If it helps, I need to do some 4 wheel drive and town driving. Not sure which engine to go with if I change.

Any advice is good advice for me, thanks.

The V6 is kind of a POS, plus it will require some custom mounts to get it to fit where the 22R-E was. Your best bet is to build a new 22R-E motor for the truck

If you're really into swapping in something else, a 2RZ from the newer tacomas almost bolts in. Just some wiring to deal with.

You will regret it if you swap for the v6... unless you wanna go to the 3.4 5vze.... then your talkin cash money..... rebuild the 22re whats the milage on it.... someone obviously neglected it for it to be knocking.... prolly forgot a few oil changes.....i've always wanted one of those sec gens with the 22re..... plus if you go v6 you gotta get comuter...tranny... rear axle.... mounts.... yea....

Thanks guys, that's all I needed to hear. I'm getting ready to rip the block apart to see just what he did to it. If it is salvageable, I will check out what it will take to rebuild it.

Do you guys know of any good places to shop around for a new 22re? Every place I have checked they want about 1400 for a rebuilt or new. Is that about average?

Kiroshu,

I wouldn't kill him because first off it was my brother. lol. Second, my brother only owned the rig for about two weeks before it went. Oh well right? Now I have a Project. I love Toyota's, so at a cost of only 300 for the rig I was exited!

I checked into the rebuild kit from NAPA, cost about 400. Not bad. I'll start to rip into the motor this week.
