Changing Oil pan gasket

Hi. Im about to change the oil pan gasket in an 89 4runner with a 22re, because I mangled the front part of it while installing the timing cover. Anyways...Do I have to raise the engine at all to get the pan off?? any other tricks that I need to know about??

And as for the gasket...is there a particular gasket that I need or is recommended? or will the standard gasket at local parts store do the trick??

Thanks guys!!

do a search on here 92 Toy just started a thread not too long ago about removing an oil pan. As well as alot of other threads on here about it. It's easier with a manual trans than an auto. That's all I am gonna say. You will see some of the posts are from me on how to remove it with a manual trans.

the front diff will be in the way, if you seach there are threads on different ways to do this repair.
you are better off using high quality RVT silicone than a gasket. don't go crazy with how thick you put it on.
good luck

FIPG (form-in-place-gasket....BLACK) from TOYOTA is what I've seen recommended over and over. There is no suitable gasket for this repair, so I'm told.

oh yeah x2 on the gasket as well. the pan gasket that came with my ENGNBLDR kit is leaking already after 1500 miles. Not looking forward to doing the pan gasket. Maybe I will have 92 Toy do mine since he's fresher than me on doing it.

....

....
.......

On second thought I don't think I'll have a few months it took him to get his off. .

Using a cork gasket isn't so bad. Just follow the gasket supplier's recommendations. And if you use RTV, follow those too- flash / skin time, install, cure time, etc.

Or use Hylomar and put it together and rock and roll.

Either way, use Loctite 'blue' on the pan bolts; red is too much and green is way over-the-top.
