Am I crazy?

hi all, i have a 5speed t4r 1990, when i put it in 4wd and drive in a circle it sounds like one wheel in the rear is fighting the turn almost if it had a locker. then when in 2wd it turns much nicer and smooth. is this normal? its also jerky in 4wdh, like the rear right tire is spinning faster than the other three but not all the time like every third rotation. ok when you let go of the gas it seems like it has alot of drag like if the front diff was at a different gear ratio, strange... it works great in 4 low. now remember im a noob and i am new to 4wd's. i had a jeep friend drive it for me and he said it feels really jerky in 4wdh not smooth.

Are you doing this on a hard packed surface like cement or asphalt?

If so, stop. It's normal.

no on a dirt trail rocky surface. ok so its normal. i thought something was broken.

4wd is MEANT for surfaces you're going to loose grip on

just as a rule of thumb, don't engauge 4wd on surfaces that 2wd can handle with ease; diveline things start to bind up (in lame-man's terms )

Or.... even better.... dont use 4wd till u get stuck in 2wd..... I can USUALLY back out of anything in 4wd, that I got into in 2wd.

These things I will keep in mind to,learn something new everyday.Hey yotalaz,you got the replica of mine down to the white paint.What size tires u got? in that pic they look narrow.Team420 sounds like words to live by to keep driveline lasting eh.

Binding is normal when making sharp turns. Since your Runner is new to you, you might want to drive somewhere open, flat and paved to do one test, just to be sure. Park where you can drive in a straight line for 100 yds or so. Put your truck in 4wd. Drive straight ahead up to about 15 mph then coast in neutral. Your 4Runner should coast along easily. If it slows down and comes to a stop in a short distance, someone could have at some point changed your front or rear differential to the wrong ratio.

This isn't very likely, but I've seen it before.

from what i know about 4wd's witch is kinda limited. when in 4-high or 4-low ina strait line it should drive smoth, when you make sharp turns in 4-high or 4-low you will feel the front out side tire kinda jump acrossed the pavment and it will be very jurky. the one truck i have seen that had the wronge gearing in the front axle would dip the front end down really hard while locked in on paved surface. but on dirt you couldnt tell. mw and the guy with the truck went wheeling all day and didn't know till he forgot to unlock and we hit the street.

on my truck it dose feel difrent in 4wd then 2wd the stearing the way it takes off slows down everything feels diffrent, keep that in mind that it can and will feel a lil diffrent i would be willing to bet if the gearing is diffrent you would know as soon as you locked in and tryed to take off.

Well hopefully I'm going 33 x 10.5 next week. But for right now the tires are factory. Id like to see a pic of your runner post one when you can.

Ill try that coasting thing today I know just the road. Ill post a video of what it does. Well I'm off to the junk yard to find a drive shaft and a fan shroud..

It shouldn't be jerky at all in the dirt. You could hear tire slipping but shouldn't feel jerkiness.
