Air cleaner housing quandry
Hey all. This here is the air cleaner assembly. The black box I know is part of the original air cleaner assembly and I presume it's important as it appears (?) to send air into the manifold. The problem is whoever put this K&N in did a horrific job and the box has been sitting on the alternator wheel putting a huge gash in it. I am guessing that's bad as it will allow dirty air in the system.
My question is what are my options? I cannot identify this part to save my life and have only seen it in conjunction with a complete OEM air cleaner housing. Any suggestions?

Just remove the hose and air box and put a small cone filter in its place, all that box is - is just a resonator and if i remember right its part of the emissions junk. The original owner should have just removed it and put a small filter in its place, but he left it for you to do. Most auto parts stores carry small filters, look in the ricer section.

I just (last night) installed the same K&N on my truck. The PO that installed it must not have doneit correctly because after installation, you should have good clearance. It sounds like you may be missing one of the brackets. I would also try contacting K&N, look at your parts, I'd try to get them to send you one of the brackets. You should have 3 brackets bolting all that stuff to your rig. 2 come off of the big black cricle thing, and one comes off the MAF. I hope I'm getting these terms right, but I'm sure you'll know what I mean. Just my .02
