81 Toyota 22R, loud noise from Rear of engine or Transmission?

Its kind of like a sputtering pitter patter noise. Not really sure how to describe the noise other than that.

The noise only occurs when in gear and moving, and only is clearly noticeable during the first few seconds of accelation. Noise occurs in every gear.

Engine runs fine and revs fine while sitting in neutral. but the second the vehicle is put in gear and begins moving the noise is clearly discernible.

I havent had a chance to look at or tinker with it as i just got home from a long drive. im looking for any information that can keep me from breaking something as i dont want to run it and cause problems.

I will take a look at a number of things tomorrow and hopefully post a video by that time as well.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Mod Edit: its an 81 toyota.22r transmission out of a 94 toyota pickup,
--noise sound like its coming from the rear of the engine compartment in the middle or more towards the passenger side. it only occurs loudly while the vehicle is moving.

I will check that in a matter of minutes and get back to you. Finally got a couple days off from work

i took a couple videos today to try and capture the noise. Its kind of hard to hear as it was taken on my iphone. Listen between 3-7 on the second video and 1700 to 2300 rpm on the first video.

Also i picked up a compression tester today at napa and tested the cylinders.

cyl 2: 139
cyl 3: 138
cyl 4: 135

Edit: Im kinda leaning toward exhaust leak of some sort. possibly valves need adjusting. ill keep posting more info as i obtain it.

once again thanks for the help

engine definately makes the noise while just idling. its just harder to hear.

what is the best way to check for an exhaust leak? i have looked at and cannot feel exhaust coming out of anywhere.

i have three more videos that i just took because i could really hear the noise when i fired the truck up this morning. the noise is clearly discernible in the last video. it is the really fast clicking noise. also note that im not pointing the camera at where i think the noise is coming from most of the time, im trying to point the mic at the noise.

Right after start up

what is the best way to find an exhaust leak?

how do i check the rocker arms?

Could it possibly be the engine is running too rich or too lean?

So i dropped the exhaust out and replaced the gaskets where the header bolts to the downpipe and where the muffler bolts to the cat. i also put rtv on at those places. i fired it up a while after i put it all back together to see if there was any change. The noise was still there. So i went around and checked where the new gaskets had been put in and where the header meets the downpipe there was some smoke coming out. i think it might have been the rtv burning cause it didnt seem to be coming out with much force. I will try and fix whatever is going on there tonight or tomorrow and also adjust the valves in that time. Anybody have any more ideas as what to check or look for? I can get whatever video or pictures or info you need to help diagnose what this is. Thank you all again

Make sure when you replace the exhaust manifold gasket(s) that your tourqe them down when the engine is cold the start it let it warm to operating temp. Shut it off let it cool down to bone cold again a re-tourqe.

Also alot of the noise i hear is engine noise. But there is a slight exhaust leak somewhere.... You could go ahead and replace all gaskets.... Sounds kinda like theres a small hole in da muffla

Wish my 81 22r sounded as nice as yours

My whole exhuast system leaks and is rusted out.
