4x4 clunk please help
Hi guys. I own a 92 automatic transmission 4runner. I bought in June and has served me well. Don't wheel it as it is my daily driver. Today while driving I had engaged 4x4 a few times on some sketchy unplowed roads (better safe then sorry) While I was driving my 4x4 light would flicker on and off really fast repeatedly. It flickers on occasion once every 3 weeks but it was never an issue. Then my truck started to clunk as it flickered. The lights would flicker a bunch, it would clunk 2 or 3 times in a matter of then 10 seconds, this would repeat itself every 8 or 9 minutes of driving. It seems worse when I am coasting to a stop or my tires spin slightly from the snow while accellerating. Anyone know any possible problems? Possible solutions? Am I safe driving it? Thanks alot for any replies.

They would either be ADD (Automatic Differential Disconnect) or manual hubs. Auto-hubs were phased out in '89/'90. Considering he said 4runner, we can assume ADD since no 4runner after '89 came factory with manual locking hubs. Of course he could have converted, but no mention of that.
To me, it sounds like the ADD modulator (the vacuum switch thing on the front of the diff) is locking and unlocking the axle shafts slightly and and not all the way and the fork is just touching the switch that closes the circuit for the 4wd light.

I drove it around today. It definitely wasn't as bad. The 4x4 light flickered a few times but nothing attempted to engage. Would like to fix it if possible. Sorry in myl ast post I meant to say they are Automatic Differential Disconnecting hubs. Not the older Auto hubs

To llittle thing you can try put new oil in were the shift fork is some times they get gumed up and dont work will or you my have a vacume leak so look at the lines and if thats not it your looking at some new parts.
