3rd Gen Towing Questions
Hello,
I am searching for a 3rd Gen 4Runner to replace my old 1995. For the last few weeks i have been looking at a nice 99 Black SR5 with Fender Flares, that has just went down in price.
The problem is i have just noticed that it does not have a Towing Hitch, and therefore i am presuming it does not have a towing package. My main reason for buying a 4Runner is that i need it to tow my boat (around 2000 lbs.) for distances up to 400 miles at a time.
What is included in the towing package from the factory? Would it be completely neccessary to have the towing package for what i use, and if i need it can it be easily added to my 4Runner if i would buy this truck?
Adding a towing hitch and plugging into the electical system is not a problem for me, but i am wondering if it is neccessary to have a transmission cooler, IF that comes with a 3rd Gen 4Runner
Thanks
Nick

The 3rd Gens have a max tow capcity of 5000lbs
So your set for pulling your boat
Tow package I believe is simply throwing on a Htich and getting the wireing hooked up...
Someone correct me if I am wrong on this....
So it shouldn't be hard, and yes get a transmission cooler, granted I beleive there is one built in (not 100% sure on this), but after going through a transsmission rebuild on stepdads 02' Runner that is one of the things mom is getting him and I for chirstams to put on...
Just my .02

Hi Scrpy..
I would also install a tranny temp gauge to help you keep an eye on the temperature spikes, especially if you end up climbing some steep hills. As stated before, the weight of your boat will not be an issue (and the lower profile also means less wind resistance than a travel trailer).
I've included a thread detailing what I went through regarding my towing experience..

Good luck;

Also, make sure the rear brakes are good to go. I just found out both my inner axle seals were leaking, thus coating my brakes and rendering them useless. Dealer wanted $1400 to do both seals and rear brakes. I took care of everything for under $100. My rig stops so much better now. Functional rear brakes...what a concept!
