Starter rebuild - brush part number?
Hello,
I have a 2003 4runner SR5, automatic and I need to the change the brushes on the starter.
The starter part number is 28100-31040.
Does anyone know the part number for the brush assembly?
Thanks!

Dang, that was too easy. I was hoping to hone my skills in a previously un-posted-in forum. But...WHAM! There it was..28140-76070.
Was that a test? Did I pass?
I need some extra credit to make up for the part # goof I made earlier this evening.
Wow...this place is all quiet and desolate. Nothing but 6 stickies and 13 real threads. I'm scared...going back where I belong now...in a hurry like...nice talking to ya!

Thanks Mudhippy,
That part number does not look like my brush holder.
The local deal said they can't get me the brush holer and wants to sell me a new starter.
Below is a pic of a brush holder for a Toyota Solara that looks like the one I need for my 4runner:

O.k., so I don't know why I'm getting that part # for your 2003 4Runner SR5 starter brush assembly. I don't know of a source for good pics of OEM parts either. But I'll trade you for my part # resources. Those are ToyoDIY.com and utoyot8.com. They both seem to match up when I cross-reference them for different part #'s. Both said it should have been 28140-76070. But it's not the first time someone has told me that they didn't believe that the number(s) from those sites were a match for what they believe are correct for their vehicle. It has only happened twice, including this instance. Both have been for late model vehicles like yours.
Alot, dare I say most, of the time the part #'s found on those sites are superceded by a later part #. I always take the #'s I find and check their accuracy on 1stToyotaParts.com. They will supply the new part #'s that supersede any earlier part #'s. They have all the Toyota parts one could ever ask for at very reasonable prices, and they won't tell you that they can't get a part for you.
I've used those sites to find many many many parts for early models, and they seem to ALL match up perfectly. I've ordered many parts for my 88 PU using the #'s from ToyoDIY and they've all been exactly for the part I needed. It seems that, though I can't say for certain why, the discrepency applies to some vehicles/models after 95. As for previous years the part #'s seem to match the ones found on those sites everytime.
So, I looked up the starter brush assembly for a 2004 Solara. It's called a commutator end, but I believe that's the part you're showing me there from looking at the diagram on utoyot8.
28130-20020 is for the starter commutator end frame assembly. It looks to be where the brushes are located.
There's also a repair service starter kit it's listed as 28226-28051.
And a motor terminal starter kit it's 28226-28041.
I haven't checked for any superseding part #'s for those yet. I'm on another persons computer and it's having trouble communicating with 1stToyotaParts. I'll check those when I get home.
Side note: Superseding parts in general don't look exactly like the parts that they supersede. The upgrades are usually a design change and can look totally different in appearence.
Edit: The first part # for the starter brush holder assembly is, as it turns out upon further, investigation for a 2UZ-FE engine. Yours is a 3MZ-FE if I'm not mistaken. So the part # is right, it's just not right for your engine's starter. Where I went astray was not using the starter assembly part # you gave me to begin with. The part #'s for the Solara should, however, be the right ones. They state that they're for the starter on a 3MZ-FE.
MY BAD!

Mudhippy -thanks!
I found the 28100-31040 starter on the ToyoDiy.com site.
Looks like the part I need is the 28130-31040. This part list for US$20-/+. I live in the Cayman Islands and the dealer wants $50.......Paradise is expensive!
Do you know any dealers that offer international shipping or will just ship to my freight forwarder in Florida? I have a Paypal account if you know of any members that sell Toyota Parts.

I would try PMing DeathCougar. He works for Nix99 Toyota and Lexus used parts retailer in Washington state. He seems to be the man to go to for hard to get/find parts.
Here's a link to Nix99, if he doesn't respond quickly.
Nix99.com
He can get new parts too, not just used.
