Mysterious Clanking, got help?
I have an 06 Tacoma Access Cab 6 speed manual 4x4 TRD Off Road. I've just broke 10K miles. Ever since I bought my Taco, I've had a mysterious "clank" from underneath truck when going over bumps. Bumps have to be smaller and not larger suspension flexing bumps. It has to be when the rear wheels hit the bump. The clanking sounds like metal "clanking" about 2-4 times. I don't feel anything in the gear shift or steering wheel or pedals. Oh ya, it seems to have days the clank is worse and more frequent than other days on the same bumps. I can't find anything underneath my truck that is damaged or loose. The same tech at the dealership has looked multiple times and can't find anything. And of course it never makes a peep when he's in the truck. I've read the posting about the frame separating from the axle on 1 guys truck.
Does anyone have any ideas about what it could be? It drives me nuts! Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Greetings,
Just a thought...I have a 06 Taco and had something similiar. I had "clanking" towards the rear of the vehicle. It would only happen with a bit of torque on the truck. I checked everthing I could, but could not find anything...I thought the worst. I brought the truck to the Toyota dealer...they put it on the lift and put it in drive. It made the "clanking" noise and it was loud. It ended up being a piece of heat shield for the exhaust that was bent. Just under the right conditions the driveline would hit the heat shield. I am not sure how it got bent, but everything is fine now.
This is just a thought... I hope your noise is simple and easy to fix.
Good Luck,

Thanks for the advice, I looked at the heat shields and they look alright. I'm gonna strip my truck of everything that could possibly clank underneath and I only hope I can figure out that it's nothin serious. But I still think it has to do with my transmission.
Thanks

I'm waiting on the rear spring TSB to come out so I can read it but it is on my list of unfortunate possibilities. I miss my 2002 Tacoma more and more every time I hear that clanking. Oh well. Thanks

If your spare tire is out, the chain/cable with the thing on the end where the tire hangs onto it might be hitting things down there. My 94 4Runner does it if I go over big bumps, or take corners too fast.
