Buying 2005 4Runner. Help!

Hello -

I'm a current owner of a 2000 4Runner, but am about to cash it in for a 2005. I test drove the 2005 today (V6) and am amazingly impressed with it's power (combined with it's smoothness). What a difference! I'm primarily a commuter, but I also own a boat so I need the towing capability. Only on a few occasions a year do I take it out (lightly) off-road. I think I'm going to love the new model!

A few questions and concerns:

1) I absolutely want the 3rd row seat, leather, sunroof, and hood scoop. However, the DEALER TOLD ME that you can't get the 3rd row seat with the sport option, and you can't "add" the third row seat as an option. Therefore, I can't have both the hood scoop and the third row seat. Does anyone have any additional information on this? (Can a hood scoop be added to the Limited, for instance?)

2) I want the third row seat option for when guests come into town, we can all ride together for simple trips. I have two kids (9 and 12) that would (presumably) go into the back row. However, I've heard rumors that the seats back there are really cramped. They didn't have a 3rd row seat model at the dealership I visited, so I couldn't see it firsthand, but we did check out the Highlander's 3rd row option. Does anyone know if the 4Runner's third row is smaller than a Highlander?

3) As I said before, I tow a boat frequently. Any experience between towing capacity of the 2000 model and the 2005 model? (Obviously, based on all spec's, it should have significantly more capacity, but I was just wondering if there is anything else I should be aware of).

4) The price I'm being asked for a 2005 SR5 4Runner, 6cyl. with ADDED Leather and Moonroof, is $32,990. Any opinions?

Thanks!

I think you have to sit facing sideways in the 3rd row. Never for me! Pity your guests!

huh? The 3rd row, I thought, was just like any 3rd row - cramped, but with passengers facing forward just like everyone else ...

check out the following thread, particularly the pictures in post #11:

https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/pics-request-4th-gen-4runner-3rd-row-seats-46091/

also, in post #3, GT mentioned that he thought it might be a bit more roomy than the highlander. in the same thread, RinkRat said:
Hey, I bought the third row (but miss the moonroof) and it was most definitely not built for adults. I just had a second child and I bought it for them. My wife is small (5') and she could go back there if needed. I'll take some pics and put 'em up. The nice thing about them is they can be taken out in two seconds if needed, they recline, and there is lots of room when they are up against the windows. They also look like a nice, well made seat for a removable third row, not just some piece of crap thrown in there just to say there's room for 7. I looked at the pilot, highlander, and 05 pathfinder, and I found the 4Runner the best of all, thank goodness. I wanted a 4Runner but needed the approval of my wife and she liked this the best too.

as far as the hood scoop ... you can always add that later if you want. hope some of this helps!

r0cky-

GREAT help! Thanks! As I said, we did test out the 3rd row seats on the Highlander, and while small, they weren't THAT bad for kids. Seeing the pics of the third row seats makes me feel confident that they'd do the job when I needed them to.

Yes, they also told me I couldn't get the sunroof with the Third Row Seat either, but they said they can ADD the sunroof (and will be) for about $1500.

The problem is the hood scoop. The dealer can't add this as an option, so that would leave me with scrapping the hood that comes with the truck and replacing it with one with a hood scoop. Would there be a problem with this? Has someone done this in the past?

Darren, yes, I know of a couple people off hand that have done the hood scoop thing. A lot have done it with previous generation 4Runners as well ... but yes, some have done it with the 4th gen. too. If you can get the third row seat, that seems like the biggest thing ... because it sounds like you can (if necessary) add the sunroof and hood scoop later down the line. also, I'm certain that if you had to scrap the hood in order to replace it with one with a hood scoop, you could always sell the original one on ebay or a place like that.

That post, while made by someone who has been kicked off this board many times, shows the rough price for adding the hood scoop later on.

If you want the hoodscoop, get the Sport edition. Why get the 3rd row if you're only going to be using it on rare occasions. I've seen the 3rd row on the 4th gen and for some reason, it also have different headrests on the 2nd row and its very strange looking - tall and narrow, pretty unattractive if you ask me. I'd rather pack people in the 2nd row then get the 3rd row seat.

The hood scoop is fake. You could super glue one one the stock hood and get the same look. Also, aftermarket sunroofs are cheezy. Get a factory sunroof. If you really need 3rd row seats, either rent a van when your relatives are in town, have people sit on each others laps, or just get an after market bench seat for the rear.

Heh.. thanks for all the feedback.

1) I understand the hood scoop is fake. I have one on my 2000 4Runner. But you know what? I really like it. A lot.

2) Did I say I'd only use the third row seat on rare occasions? I'm sorry, I didn't mean to imply that. I've been renting a van every time I have visitors. It gets expensive. Having 2 kids who would fit back in the 3rd row seat, it seems to make sense to have these extra seats if they are offered. The only question is would I give up the hood scoop or the sunroof? HAH. Style -vs- Function. Hmm...

I've talked to the dealer one more time, and let him know that I've found some other dealers (thanks to this board) that can provide OEM hoods with scoops. He's going to check into it -- my guess is that I will ge a call tomorrow with a way to make it work.

Thanks all for the help!

-Darren

Looks like you're more suited for a Sequoia since you tow and need a real 3rd row. Forget the hoodscoop. They don't belong on a 4WD.

Seems to me that it's getting pretty pricey "adding" all these *aftermarket* options like the leather and sunroof. Why not try and find a nicely factory equipped model with the 3rd row, and then bolt on a new hood? Remember, the dealer makes lots of money on these "add-ons".

get a sequoia. you get a third row and the ability to tow it can handle some light offroading as well!
