v6 third RE&RE
I got some major slop in my pinion bearing. Was thinking about finding a third to swap. Just wondering if anyone knows of any write ups on swapping a third?

Put this query in, when the results come up change to "images" and pick a picture that is clear and makes sense for you.
site:yotatech.com "diff swap" or "differential change"
Phil always had great photos and thorough comments to supplement the manual..
Here is his thread for a gasket change

Make a list of links that you've read, then seperate them into a like and dislike categories. Now post that list into the thread here. That serves a dual purpose, easier for others searching to find the various threads and allows for us to discuss them on case by case.
Looks like I'm going to have to get unlazy and quote RAD4Runner in my signature and save myself some time..
Lol how does that go? "A question well stated is ...."

How are you determining major slop in pinion bearing? Are you saying that you have a lot of in/out movement of your diff flange? I'm guessing either the nut backed off or your crush sleeve has compressed...have you considered simply re-torquing the pinion nut? Check 4Crawler's advice here: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/toyot...ml#post3306988

**make sure your replacement third gear ratio matches
1) jack up the truck
2) drain diff oil
3) remove the 4 nuts on each of your brake backing plates
4) undo each brake line, pull the axle all the way out..don't let it rest on the axle seal or you will have a leak later on
5) remove the rear driveshaft at the pinion
6) undo the 10-12 nuts that hold the third in, it make take some finagling
7) make sure your replacement third gear ratio matches
8) repeat steps in reverse order
9) add diff oil
