tranny difference, 89 pickup vs. 88 4runner, which is better?

I have a 1988 4runner which is in the process of getting a 1989 pickup 22re swapped in, and I was wondering if there is any reason to do the tranny swap aswell, or anything else for that matter. I have the entire truck to use for parts, it was crushed in a tornado. I think I noticed a little tighter shift pattern from the 89 pickup, but I may be wrong. What parts would you use from the pickup?

There's a ton of good info on Marlin Crawler RE: Transmissions

http://www.marlincrawler.com/htm/tra...ansmission.htm

IMO go with the '88 as its a top shift W56 (most desirable of the 4 cylinder transmissions other than R150 from a turbo truck)

The '89 has a forward shift t-case ( the transfer case is engaged through the transmission via linkage instead of shifter directly on top of the t-case)

Either will work well if in good shape (Syncro's , counter shaft, bearings etc...)

Do either have any issue like popping out of gear or grinding between shifts ?

Use the trans. from the '88 then. If you want to take care of that "shifter slop" buy a new shifter seat from Marlin. (or take the seat out of the '89 trans. and put it in the '88.)

... when you take them apart, the bushings on both may already be done so MC would be the best choice. I'm not getting paid to pimp their products, nor do I work there. I know they sell quality stuff at a really good price as compared to some of the other outfits selling off shore knock off parts.

according to Marlin's site, the 89 could be a G58 or a W56.
the 88 is a W56 series

I *assume* that a G58 is a forward shift?

The W series is better than the G - but I do tend to wear out the 5th gear every 200K or so on a W56

G58 & W56-C both came in Trucks & 4Runners produced in '89 +

they are both forward shift....

W56A & W56B came in '85-'88 (B is more desirable as it has a steel center section. The "A" has an Aluminum center section)

5th gear is a common issue with these types of transmissions.
