Too nice to junk, Help!
I have a 94 4runner 2x4 v6 automatic, with 290,500. all original except for the transmission. I love the truck but it doesn't have the power to pull a greasy string from a cats ass. drives great once I'm going. I know I have a trans problem. 1st slips after the 4runner has set for a week, (Im of town for weeks at a time). Recently drove 3hrs away to a nearby city and the trans was so hot it was hot on my leg on the carpet of the console. .Trans fluid is for sure burnt and brown, changed it for the drive home, same by the time I got home. It drove home no problems runs great at hwy speeds just a slow dog up steep grade hills. I feel it needs a new trans, problem is someone did not put the same trans back in when they replaced it..... the tail shaft is slightly larger than the original. I may not have noticed but when i jacked up the front end, to look at it a little better fluid stated running out of the tail shaft. I did some part store research on drive shaft seals and the one in the truck is not a 94-95. its for a newer trans.. seems my trans came out of a 96 and up 4runner or truck.
question 1 - What causes it to get so hot but still shift??
question 2 - I would like to go back to the 94-95 trans but the door sticker has fallen off. How do I know the original trans spec?
Question 3 - Whats different in the 94-95 transmission other than the tail shaft size?

I believe 94 & 95 4x2 4runners 3.0 V6 used a A340E, also known as 30-40LE

Nice looking truck. What makes you think the trans isn't original? Part number off a seal? Wouldn't base anything off a single part number and someone at a parts store counter, those guys are wrong quite a bit. You can check your own part numbers here - Toyota parts catalog Swapping from 2nd to 3rd gen trans isn't plug and play for a manual, don't know about auto but would assume the same, so don't know why anyone would do such a thing. Auto trans for both 3.0 and 3.4 suck for power, really need a standard. Might want to look into that if' you're pulling it anyway. Also check valve lash if you haven't already, leading cause of lost power on this engine.

Im 100% it was swapped . the trans was slipping when i got the truck . took it to a local mech. He convinced me he had another trans, looked the same, and that he would just swap them out. Me low on funds at the time told him to go ahead. Mt door tag on the drivers side door seems to have fell off or has been removed don't know which is the case. I will check out the trans flush and the valve slap thanks.
