the outter joint can take much more angle that an inner, think of what angles they have to work with when the steering wheel is at full lock, this higher angle can also be applied in a verticle plane (but isn't used this way on a stock suspension). The inner aren't designed to work at higher angles because they don't have to, just the small bit of up and down that the suspension will travel through, plus teh inners' have to deal with "plunge" . . .

no, that's what Downey ended up using instead of what you have. The u-joint was their original "super strong / high angle" axle - that one from Baja Racing is just the latest, greatest, bee's knees, indestructible bit that the peeps with big bucks are using (and Downey specifies with their "Grand Slam" LT kit for $759)

The Downey might be just as good as teh Baja Racing one since they both use the same inner CV, but the adapter or axle itself may have different levels of quality.

Bottom line, it was just a different design they went to, an evolution if you will . . . you can probably get your CV rebuilt. Back here in PA, I could refer you to a specific business that only does CV rebuilds - not much help to you out there. Call Downey and verify, but my hunch is that they used the stock outter toyota CV on their axle/slip/u-joint/adapter. in which case you should just be able to replace the outter CV with another Toyota outter.

-take off the rubber boot
-knock off the bad CV with a deadblow hammer
-slide a new boot over the axle
-place new CV on your u-jointed axle and tap into place with same hammer
-fill joint with grease
-slide the boot back on and band clamp it down

if you have lifetime warranty factory style CV axles, use one of thosefor a good outter and put the destroyed CV from your u-jointed affair back on the lifetime unit for a return

sweet that is exactly what im going to do next weekend then. The cv that i just got to replace the downey for the time being is the lifetime so ill pull that use the outer on that to put on the downey swap the one that was on downey to the lifetime warranty one and return it and keep the rotation going if need be. Thanks a million Corax for staying with me on this one.

no problem . . . if you are careful, you might be able to reuse the band clamps from your "lifetime axle" - or Harbor Freight sells stainless steel zipties that I have used in the past (can't find them online though), or you might be able to get "universal" CV boot clamps from the parts store

good job, I thought it might be in teh paper catalog - they sell more than they list online

so it does look like like you can just re-use the factory outter CV . . .
