swapping to diesel
my engine is getting old and im getting ready to rebuild or pelace it. I was wondering if anyone here had swapped out the 22re for a diesel in an 86 4runner? i'm not sure if it's even possible, but it would be cool if it is

After a bunch of research, I decided to forget the diesel for now. Here's why:
You really need a front clip to get all the crap you need for it to run right and work with the other parts of the car. (trans, ECU, etc.) Most clips come in RHD, so the engine accessories may need new mounts to clear the steering.
Front clips are brought in by a few companies like Jarco. A diesel clip costs about $2500-$5000 plus $750 shipping. Even after that expense, no one will guarantee the condition of the engine internals. They show the vehicle running before they cut it in Japan.
I spoke to one of the guys who did the swap with the 2.4L turbo-diesel. With 33" and a 5-speed, he was getting about 23 MPG. Granted, I'm sure he had tons of torque, but where's the big mileage boost?
Diesel fuel is now the same price as gas. The savings at the pump are gone. If you want the novelty of a diesel, go for it. Sometimes that's enough reason. If I can think of more, I will post it. It's late.

I am thinking Diesel when my 22re goes, just for the biofuel option. Our 22RE's don't like ethanol, I am hoping biofuel takes over soon. Farming switchgrass doesnt seem like a bad thing for the Western world. I am not interesed so much in driving fast, so a deisel might be a great option for me. How much for a new truck with a diesel compared to a $5000 dollar clip?

biofuel is the one big benifit of diesels. any fan of "Trucks" on SpikeTV will remember the episode with the french-fry oil made into fuel with that little still! and its half the cost!

If it could get 30 MPG, I would consider a clip. I like the added safety of carrying diesel fuel, as well as the grunt they produce. Toyota brought a few diesel 4WD Pickups around 1984-1985, but they are VERY hard to find.
The only thing that worries me about bio-diesel is that the sources of waste oil may become difficult to find if more people jump on the bandwagon.

Have you checked Toyotadieselmadness.com? It is pretty good with data for swaps. If you can get one of the turbo diesel engines from Toyota Surf out of South Africa it would be cool.
