Starter rebuild...again
Brand new member, long time lurker of this list and long time owner of several Toy trucks over the years. I currently own and drive a 94 basic pu (22re) and a 97 4wd Tacoma. Thanks to info gathered from this list I recently replaced the timing belt and *all* the recommended pieces and parts on the Taco. All my parts were purchased from TRDparts4u.com, also with advice from this list. About 16 hours give or take, I was happy with that. Saved a bunch, thank$!
New dilema...
I replaced the starter in the 94 with a reman from O'reilly's. 1500 miles from home, in a parking lot, minimal tools, weather was something between rain and snow. Just one of those life experiences you have to deal with, you know? Bye Bye Denso. Fast forward 2-1/2 years, click...click...click. I'd love to just replace the solenoid contacts and call it a day but there are no identifying marks or numbers on this starter. Nothing! I know its a long shot that I would have a Denso unit but (1) how is a Denso unit identified and (2) is there a data base or list for compatible starters from other Toyota models? I would go to the local Pick-a-part for a rebuildable core but not many trucks in the yard to pick parts from, lots of cars to choose from however. And I guess #3 would be has anyone had any luck rebuiding aftermarket crap starters? I'll go get a Denso unit from Napa or one of the internet vendors if I have to but would like to save that 100 or 150 bucks if I could.
Next project, to rust proof the frame rails on my 97 Taco. Looks like we'll (me and the truck) be spending a couple of winters in the Chicago area. That'll be a bitch for a couple of Northern California dudes...
Thanks for any advice
Larry
