I have now had two toyotas have identical starter problems. The 1st was a 4 banger 95 T100.

Symptoms where that when you would turn the key to the start position, the starter would turn over the engine until it started, then, as you normally would you turn the key to the on position, BUT the starter would keep spinning. It did retract, so it was not grinding with the fly wheel or anything but it would keep on going.

In the T100 we replaced the whole starter with one from a local auto parts store, and then it worked fine.

But now my rig, a 93 3.0 4 runner, is doing the same thing. I'd hate to have to buy a new starter. Is this something that replacing the contacts will fix or do I have to do the whole starter again.

The starter motor is still clearly working just fine, so do I just need a new solenoid?

any suggestions would be great!

It sounds like it is either the solenoid or the ignition sticking. I doubt it would be the contacts. If your ignition key is not sticking in the 'start' position, then you probably need a solenoid. You might be able to take apart the soldenoid and grease it up a little or something. It probably has some corrosion that is causing it to stick in the 'start' position. You could also try hitting it with a hammer to loosen up the corrosion and see if it works for a week or so.
