I'm pretty sure it's the right altimeter for the truck. But not sure if I have the right dash in it. Hmmmmm......

I think that Bob is right. I bet it is the unit for the Tercel dash. I remember those old Boxy looking Tercels.

I think it is the dash...the recessed part is too big...mine only sinks down in the spot for the altimeter thingie, not all the way across like that one...

mines recessed about 3-4" past the right side of the vents, just like the one in the picture. But by your pic's its obvious that it can't fit front to back....I say Tercel thingy...
Either mount it in the dash like others have done or make a new fiberglass pod for the dash. Or I wonder if the guts are the same & you could just find a pod that works?? yeah right, that'd be easy to find!!

Good luck.

The clinometer looks like all the ones I've seen. The ones for the Tercel are different - no altimeter, they have 4wd lights in that spot instead. (pic below)

The dash pad doesn't look right. Look at the pic from Bagger - the recess in the dash top goes all the way across and is wider, it is not just a little "tray." Never noticed that I've seen any with just the little tray - did that change in the later years?

Hmm. Easy enough to make it fit. I would peel back the vinyl cover and trim it to fit. (Way easier than cutting it down to fit IN the dash... lol)

Aha, here ya go. 2 minutes with Google and mystery solved. The dash style changed a little bit at some point (86?) and the clinometer did too.
This pic is an 88 dash, see how the recess looks? The clinometer got a little notch in it to go with that. The 85 (for example) is defferent - the dash recess goes all the way across and the clinometer for the early years is more or less flat on the bottom.

That is definitely NOT the same dash base that bagger posted a pic of above. Also, check out http://www.top4runners.com/ja/runhist1.html for option lists. It shows the altimeter/inclinometer as an option in '87, but gone by '89

not a tercel unit. Tercel doesn't have the altimeter, it has a light up indication that your rear axle is engaged. Also, the viewing angle is all wrong on the tercel unit. you would have to either edit the gauges or edit the mount to make it work on a truck and still, the fancy cover wouldn't fit right at all.

My 89's inclinometer and altimeter looks a little different than yours. Mine fits fine and the altimeter doesn't have the bullseye look and there is less orange text on the center of mine.

Does Toyota still (install/Have these) in the newer trucks if you want one? I have an 01 Tacoma SR5 and would really like to have one if there is a way to mount it in my truck so that it looks good. Mike

To mount one on a regular dash could you use "L" brackets scewed to the dash and mount the unit over the brackets and fasten it with a couple of stanless or some kind of fancy screws? Don't know how open the inside edges are but that may be another option if it can be done. You wouldn't have to take the dash apart that way. Mike

I told you it was the dash!

Just make some custom brackets for it to sit on...good as gold.

No brackets required. If you don't want it to light up, no drilling of the dash required. (the light is annoying at night anyway) We put one in a pickup by doublestick tape, just remove the metal bracket from the bottom of it and put tape on the bottom edge of the padded housing. Still there after 7 years now.
